Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval to post medieval fragment of a handle from a vessel, probably a cauldron, dating to the period c. AD 1100 - 1850. At one end, the object is triangular in section and comprises a small part of the vessel wall from which the handle projects. The handle tapers along its length and becomes oval in section, bending at a sharp angle and terminating in a worn break. According to Butler, Green and Payne (2009), "From about AD 1100, cast copper alloy vessels...were commonly used for downhearth cooking, with the vessel sitting among the embers or suspended over the fire. All but the po…

Object type: JETTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy French jetton dating to the period c. AD 1418 - 1437. Crown type. Probably struck at Paris. See: Mitchener, M, 1988, p. 194, no. 535. The unusual weight and thickness of this example suggests it may be piedfort. Introduction of thicker and heavier piedfort jettons during the 15th century appears to have resulted from the popularisation of a new method of performing calculations in manual accountancy. A collection of stationary jettons which were heavier and thicker were issued as reference points for the lighter mobile jettons in order to make these calculations.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight of probable medieval to post medieval date. Egg-shaped, with a central longitudinal perforation. Classic roman steelyards tend to be biconical with iron or copper-alloy suspension loops, often with a loop on the top and bottom. This steelyard doesn't quite fit the known types of roman steelyards nor the typical encased medieval ones. Lead examples from the Post-Medieval date are poorly understood and diffiocult to date out of context. Weight: 505g / 7793.34 grains / 17.81oz / 1.11lb avoirdupois / 1.35lb troy.

Lead spindle whorl of probable medieval date (c. AD 1200 - 1500). Biconical with a central circular perforation and a thick circumferential ridge. One face exhibits a moulded pattern of zig zag lines with pears of pellets in between. The opposite face exhibits a moulded pattern of alternating pellets and transverse lines. Spindle whorls as an artefact type can be hard to date accurately as they remained in use for a long period of time. However, Alberti (2017) comments that biconical spindle whorls are rare in the Roman period and that those examples which are decorated are more likel…
