Object type: WORKED STONE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
One of three rather undiagnostic chunks of chert found at the same time, this largest example may be part of a Mesolithic core. This piece appears to bear ridges from the removal of flakes, and was originally likely to have been part of a larger flake or core itself. There appear to be signs of retouch along one edge.

An undiagnostic chunk of chert, similar to those found to the east of Dinas promontory fort, at Porth Ruffydd (GAT-DDAA05). It is a possible worked piece, but it is not possible to classify the type of object. It may be of Mesolithic date due to the Trwyn Du findspot and the associated finds recovered at the same time (GAT-DDCB03 and GAT-DDD7D6).

Perforated stone spindle whorl or net weight of unknown date – probably Mesolithic – Modern (6500 BC – 1800 AD). The stone used to make the artefact is a micaceous sandstone which is a mid brown grey colour. The weight is irregular being broadly sub-circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The central hole is drilled from both ends, is broadly circular in shaped and waisted (egg-timer) in cross section. The maximum diameter of the hole measures 8.4mm. The whorl is not decorated and the surface is rough. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very…

A collection of field walked finds from the Sykehouse area of Doncaster has been recorded under individual records which are all linked to this one. These finds should be considered alongside the results of an excavation that was done in Sykehouse in 2002 by Archaeological Services WYAS and which are published in "Excavations at Topham Farm, Sykehouse, South Yorkshire: A Late Iron Age and Romano-British Settlement in the Humberhead Levels" by Ian Roberts, published in 2003 by Archaeological Services WYAS. The fieldwalking finds and the data from the excavation are significant because …

Chisel shaped arrowhead with tranchet sharpened end. Arrowheads of this type were popular in both the Late Mesolithic and Late Neolithic but given the other material in the assemblage the former date appears most likely. Formed on a large flake with the bulb of percussion removed. The ventral face is plain apart from some chipping and some shallow long scalar retouch at the hafting end of the left edge. On the dorsal face the left and right edges both have long abrupt scalar retouch along their length becoming invasive at the hafting end. The blade end has been sharpened with a large …

Flint transverse arrowhead, almost triangular in plan and lozenge shaped in section. It has a retouched notch on the left side of the distal tip. Both left and right margins have been retouched and both the upper right margin and proximal tip have been snapped. There is gloss on both the dorsal and ventral sides with some retouching on the left margin. It is translucent brown grey with cream flecks in colour and a tertiary cortex. Keene (1999) illustrates a similar example on page 55, Fig. 6, No. 1 which is dated to the Mesolithic period.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probably a poorly stuck 'tranchet' flake from the end of an axe of Late Mesolithic date. The small flake has been taken off across the end of a large heavily retouched tool. It is triangular in section with the retouched faces of the tool meeting in a curved end at almost 90 degrees. More of one side is present than of the other. Both sides show evidence of invasive scalar invasive semi-abrupt to shallow retouch. This flake would not have removed the entire end of the piece and although it would have created a sharp edge it is not a large or shallow as more tranchet flakes. It is 30.…

Tranchet shapening flake taken across the blade of a Mesolithic axe. The piece has clear ripples on the ventral face from being struck across the width of the blade. It is triangular in section with the dorsal face being the two sides of the axe blade. One side of the blade was relatively plain with only a few removals The other shows evidence for long semi-abrupt sub-parallel retouch along most of the blade. It is medium to translucent grey flint, 31.3mm long and 8.8mm by 7.4mm; it weighs 1.85 grams.

Tertiary soft hammer struck flake, sub semi-circular in plan, of pale white patinated light grey flint with a slightly darker band through the middle of the flake and a few small spots of iron stains. All flake scars to the dorsal face are also soft hammer and are struck centripetally from the curved edge, the ventral face has two small remnants of the (presumably) original ventral surface of the core tool, also to the curved edge. The distal end to the flake is broken transversely. This is appears to be a tranchet flake to sharpen the cutting edge of an adze or similar tool, if…

A flint tranchet axehead from the early Mesolithic period (c.9000 - 8000 BC). The flint is a brownish-cream colour with crumbling inclusions visible. The axe is crudely worked, with a rounded cutting edge, roughly parallel sides and a pointed butt. It has a broadly triangular cross-section. The flint appears to be in the second stage of being worked. The broad shape of the blade and technique used of the removal of a single flake with a transverse blow is common in the early Mesolithic. The object has been broken in antiquity caused by inclusions or possibly been discarded because th…

A small tranchet axe made from a large flake, 89.2mm long, 46.8mm wide and 25.9mm thick. The implement is made of dark brown flint with numerous lighter and darker cherty inclusions; about 5% cortext remains. The upper, dorsal face, has multiple arrises; at least 7 flakes had previously been removed from the core but later retouching and possible flaking from use makes an exact count difficult. The ventral, lower face, has two large facets with again multiple scars from retouching and damage; these have removed the bulb of percussion/bulb scar. The visible bulb scars and percussion wa…
