A complete worked flint hand tool of probable Mesolithic date (c.10,000-4,000BC) Description: The object is broadly rectangular in plan and oval in cross section. It has been produced from a secondary flake of dark grey flint with white patches and flecks as well as some translucent brown areas, on the dorsal face there are also some small areas of cortex with small iron deposits visible. The ventral face has invasive, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch on its surface and a possible striking platform at the proximal end. The dorsal face …

The edge is also slightly serrated. Dimensions: Length 29.3mm; width 20.9mm; thickness 5.5mm; weight 4.08g This object is a part of a collection of flints that have been recovered from three fields over a number of decades. The group includes arrowheads and flakes demonstrating the different phases of flint working. Objects from this group are recorded under the following PAS record…

A small notched flint blade of Mesolithic or later date, 30.9mm in length, with a triangular cross section. One side has been notched using a small amount of short abrupt retouch; a concave break on the other side may also have been deliberately enhanced into a second notch. A small patch of cortex remains on the distal tip.

A worked flint fragment, 41.5mm in length, which is narrow and tapers to a point. One side is curved with parallel removal scars; the other side comprises three facets in a trapezoidal arrangment giving the whole a thick lozengiform cross section. The proximal end appears to have broken and there is no apparent retouch. Possibly a piercing tool and of Mesolithic or later date.

A complete flnt lithic implement of probable Melithic to Neolithic date (c. 9000 BC - 2100 BC). The object is sub-rectangular in plan and slightly curved. The cross-section is D-shaped with a distinct point off-centre on the dorsal face, suggesting this object was a core with up to four flake removals surrounding. The left and right edges show potential abrupt retouch (as noted by the finder) suggesting subsequent use as a scraper. The object was struck from a secondary flint flake and the object is opaque grey with white patination. Cortex has been noted by the finder on the…

A tertiary struck flint flake, 50.9mm in length and possibly of Mesolithic date, struck from a brown coloured flint which has been heavily recorticated with a white patina from prolonged deposition in calcareous sediments. A secondary re-use in a much later period of prehistory (possibly the Bronze Age) is demonstrated by an area of short parallel semi-abrupt retouch along one edge, which has broken through the patination.

Flint nodule with cortex lithic implement. A large object, perhaps one half of a longitudinally split nodule with a slightly concave fracture surface which has accumulated a dense thick [2.5mm where visible from the side] creamy patina suggesting it has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. The cortex is trimmed by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect along opposed long edges, and also across one end of the nodule where the patina is interrupted. The result is a crude massy but certainly deliberately formed implement. Suggested date: Early Mesolithic,…

A complete bevelled pebble with probable hammer use wear of Mesolithic date. The tool is oval in cross section and tapers slightly from one end to the other. It is bevelled at one end and shows use wear consistent with hammering at the other. Bevelled pebbles are fairly common finds on later Mesolithic sites, particularly along the coast. They are commonly interpreted as being used in the processing of seal skins. This particular tool has been used as a hammer in addition to the bevelled edge, and may have been carried inland for this purpose.
