A cast lead-alloy weight of Medieval-Post-Medieval date, c. 1300-1900.
The weight is hemispherical with a flat base and a slightly pointed peak. A circular perforation runs from the peak to the base to take a suspension loop or hook (now missing), and for which there is also an discoidal impression in the base.
The weight is 1 lb 4 oz, and given this exact weight, a more recent date seems likely.

A biconical lead steelyard weight of uncertain date. Although it is difficult to date weights this one may be Roman in date as it was found on a site producing prodominantly Roman artefacts. The weight is oval with a diameter of 27.56mm x 25.24mm and a height of 26.27mm. The artefact weighs 63.45g (2.24oz). It is uncertain whether the cross section of this weight was originally circular but has become reshaped into an oval under it's own weight. An iron attachment loop passed through the centre of the weight and the remains of this can be seen at either end.

Lead possible weight. Cast irregularly conical weight with off-centre longitudinal aperture of diameter 5mm. At the broader end the aperture is surrounded by an oval hollow of length 10mm, revealed by removal of fine red sandy soil. The mass of the object may relate it to Scandinavian-derived units of circa 24.4gms (plus or minus 0.8gms). However, such weights are not usually perforated, so use as a later ?fishing weight is possible. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Medieval 850-1500

A cast lead alloy Post Medieval shield shaped weight dating from about 1500-1800. It has been roughly cast and has a slightly concave base; it is undecorated. The material has a number of deep gouges and scratches due to wear and damage; there is also a roughly carved 'W' on the upper surface. The weight has a light-medium grey patina with small areas of ferrous corrosion probably indicating an iron handle. It is in fair condition and weighs 477g (just over 1 pound); it is possible that the original weight was 1.5lbs but this has been reduced due to damage and wear and the loss of the…

A complete Medieval to Post-Medieval cast lead unifaced weight, circa AD1200 - AD1800. Originally circular, the weight has been squashed from two sides leaving it almost oval to kidney-shaped. Traces of its original surface design are legible - a solid cross, the arms extending to the edge of the artefact, with a single pellet (diameter c.4.7mm) in each angle, and a small dome-shaped pellet in its centre (diameter c.8.8mm). These decorative features are formed in relief and are reminiscent of reverse designs on Medieval coins. The reverse of the weight is blank. It measures 43.9mm in …

Notes: Copper alloy item with patterns punched into one side. The object is flat; in plan it is rectangular with rounded edges measuring 115mm in length and 50mm in width. The sides are c3mm in length. The underside of the object appears to be plain, but much of the original surface has been lost. There is damage to one end of the object. The decoration on the 'top' side of the object is in the form of small triangular punch marks, in a line around the border. There is a small circle, made from the triangular punch marks and a wavy line which appears to run across the centre of the ob…

A cast lead alloy and iron trade weight, of probable Post Medieval dating (17th to 18th Centuries AD). The object is a disc with slightly rounded edges and contains a central circular plug of iron, visible on both faces. One face has been stamped with II. The object has a mid-grey patina.
Biggs, N. & Withers, P. (2000) note that weights of this type with numerals are consistent with the Roman weight-system as well as the averdepois system, thus they could equally be 16th century. Given the growing number of these lead weights being found in the North West, it is more probable that …

A medieval, shield shaped lead weight dating from 1350-1500AD. There is a raised, central field containing a device that is too worn to decipher with any degree of certainty, but is probably a fleur-de- lys. The weight is 41.7mm long, 31.2mm wide and 12.5mm thick. It weighs 109.66gm.
Similar weights are illustrated in Biggs and Withers, 2000, Lead Weights: The David Rogers Collection, pages 41-42.

Lead and shell probable weight. Cowrie shell filled with lead. The shell was trimmed opposite its diagnostic vulva-shaped opening to permit lead to be poured into it; a little lead protrudes at the natural opening of the shell. Once solidified, the lead may itself have been trimmed flat. Though cowrie shells are among exotica characteristic of 'Final Phase' furnished Anglo-Saxon burials, the insertion of other objects into lead weights is more strongly associated with the Anglo-Scandinavian period. Units of 4.07gms and 4.43 gms are respectively associated with Scandinavia and Viking A…

A cast lead steelyard weight of Medieval or later date. It is oval shaped in form and section, with casting seams visible on both sides. At the top of the object are the corroded remains of an iron loop, now mostly missing due to old breaks, the end of which is visible at the centre of the base of the object. The entire object measures 38.35mm in length, 27.51mm in width, 24.75mm in thickness and 124.21g. This is a steelyard weight of probable Post-Roman date, perhaps c.1200-1700 AD.

Lead unidentified object. Cast flat-based conical object with extremely irregular sides, perhaps cast in a hole made by pressing a little fingertip in a bed of coarse sand. The mass could indicate this to represent 4 units of a Scandinavian weight measurement system based on modules of 4.07gms, but the form and poor finish are both unusual rfor such an object. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Post-Medieval, 850-1800
