Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead object, probably a small weight of uncertain date. The weight is plano-convex having a flat base and domed top with rounded edges. No traces of decoration are present. The metal has a creamy white colour and is slightly worn. The weight is 13.9mm in diameter, 5.5mm thick and weighs 5.1g. Such objects are difficult to date with any degree of certainty without contextual evidence or any diagnostic features therefore this object must be attributed a broad date ranging from Roman to Post-medieval.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead weight of probable Roman date. The weight is tall and plano-convex in plan with a central rod of iron projecting from the base and apex. Both end of the rod have split terminals and were most probably used for suspension. The metal has a mid whitish-brown colour and is worn. The weight is 24.8mm tall, 15.8mm in diameter and weighs 24.6g. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and are hard to date precisely. However, it is likely that this example is Roman in date.

There are the remains of a trapped iron wire loop where the iron staining is. These weights were apparently designed for use in surf and are often used when crabbing. They are also used on occasion on modern hand looms, usually by hobbyists. Maximum external diameter of 39mm, thickness 17mm, and the central perforatio…
