Part of the wings and the lower part of the bow, including the catch-plate, are missing due to old breaks. The pin is also missing. A fragment of a cast copper alloy and tinned Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) brooch of late fifth to sixth century (c. AD 475 - c. AD 600). Length: 20.0mm; width: 15.8mm and 5.6mm thick. Weight: 2.68g. The fragment is probably part of the foot of a small-long brooch or the foot of a radiate-headed brooch. It has old transverse breaks at either end. The break near the catch-plate appears to be more recent than the other break. The front is flat and in plan the sides are curvilinear in profile: they flare outwards and then inwards so that when the foot was complete it was probably sub-loze…

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A hollow silver centre-piece boss from a dress-hook of Post-Medieval, sixteenth century date (AD 1500 - AD 1600). The object is circular in section. The sides contain open-work with a solid nipple at the apex and a narrow opening at the base. Within the opening is the remains of a split-pin which appears to be soldered to the sides of the opening. The object is probably a boss from the centre of a dress-hook. The split-pin would have penetrated the centre of the back-plate of the dress-hook and each side folded back to firmly secure it in place.
