Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy shoe or knee buckle dating to the Post-Medieval period (c. AD 1660-1720). The buckle consists of a slightly convex sub-trapezoidal symmetrical frame with flat expanded outer edges. The top and bottom edges of the frame taper inwards and consist of a moulded spherical spindle housing. Each end has a indent for the pin to rest on. The underside of the buckle frame is plain and flat except for the spherical spindle housing which extends slightly beyond the frame. The spindle remains and also has a cast stud chape mostly intact minus its' stud end. The buck…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An iron hammer of a large flintlock pistol, possibly a Brown Bess lock (Noel Hulme, 1969, fig. 214, fig. 69, no. 5). The jaws would have connected together and to the hammer by a vertical bar running down one side. The screw would have run vertically through the jaws adjacent to the side fixed by the vertical bar and would have tightened to hold the flint in place. The flint is missing but would have projected beyond the open side of the baws - opposite the vertical bar and screw. The mechanism is showing signs of active corrosion. The length is 125mm, the width is 78mm and the weight…

An incomplete iron 'Axehead of Medieval to Post-Medieval date (AD 1000-1550). The object appears to be hand forged and is sub-rectangular with a wedge shaped, downward projecting blade broken off before the socket. As the blade expands in width it tapers in section especially towards the lower half; forming a wide even cutting edge. The metal surface has laminated and no surface marks or stamps can be seen, these may be lost through corrosion. The metal is a deep orange in colour with a pitted and corroded patina. The length is 80mm, the width is 70mm thickness and the weight 150.9…

A corroded wrought iron tool, perhaps a pickaxe of probably Medieval to Post-medieval date 1200 to 1800AD. The object is rectangular in section and is a curved tapering spike. It could be a broken axe head. The butt-end of the tool-head has an irregular circular socket. Iron decay in the form of rust is present over all surfaces of this artefact. The profile of this artefact, in the current condition, is sub-rectangular and suggests a slightly downward curved hook, away from the socket, towards the end of the blade. The length is 110mm, the width is 27mm thickness 33mm and the weight 65.64g.

Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An iron post-medieval cannon ball, probably dating to the 17th century. It is cylindrical. It measures 95mm in diameter. The size suggests that it was intended to be fired from a demi-culverin, a medium cannon in use during the late 16th and 17th century. Other options might be that it is a ball from a ball mill for crushing minerals or a foreign cannon ball of unidentified type. Blackmore, H. L. 1976. The Armouries of the Tower of London. Vol. 1, Ordnance, 216. London: HMSO. The diameter is 90mm.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval iron cannon ball, dating to the period AD 1600-1800. It is made of iron, which has been presumably cast, although no seams are visible. The ball is dark brown with lighter flecks across a relatively smooth surface, with only light pitting. The diameter is 57mm. This ball is likely from a Minion cannon in use from the mid-16th century through to the end of the 17th, possibly dating to the English Civil War. Minion cannons were typically of a 3 or 3.25 'bore' (diameter of the barrel aperture) firing balls of 2.7/8inches or 3 inch in diameter respectively. This example at…

Sparkes, Old Horseshoes, Page 15. This 'later medieval' form can be found illustrated in Clark (1986, 3; fig. 8). Clark, J., 1995. The Medieval Horse and its Equipment c.1150 - c.1450. An incomplete iron bevelled key hole type horseshoe of post-medieval date, (1550-1880). The object is a typical U-shape in plan with a keyhole profile in the centre and is almost complete. The calkins are rounded and worn. The number and location of the nail holes cannot be determined due to corrosion. This horse shoe is very similar to one on page 41 of Bailey, G. 1997. A cast iron ball, probably a cannon ball. Given its weight and size, it may be from the 16th or 17th century. The object is sub-spherical, there are no obvious signs of impact damage indicating use. This is probably a canister shot, possibly dating to the Civil War, but more probably dating to c. AD 1600 - c. AD 1700. It is possibly intended for use in a Rabinet cannon, which had a bore of 1.5 inches (38mm).
