Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of the copper alloy matchlock, probably dating to AD c.1600-c.1750. This plate is probably part of the firing mechanism possibly the serpentine. It would be one of a pair. It is engraved to appear like a birds head and is probably for a commissioned rather than a mass produced matchlock possibly for hunting in terms of fowling. It is unusual in that it is copper rather than iron but sometimes brass is used on expensive' sporting guns, but usually rather later in the 18th rather than 17th century, and often continental (German usually) in origin. The length is 62mm, the wid…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy pin terminal of possible Roman date (AD 43-200) but could just as easily relate to a mount for a post-medieval stamp (1700 - 1900). The object has an elongated terminal knop divided from the rest of the object by a collar with finely incised cross hatch. Similar ornament adorns a second collar immediately before the shank. This is consistent with Roman pins with heads of bead, reel and spool motifs surmounted by a flattened sphere. Although the fitting would suggest a mount rather than a pin it is similar in style to a Crummy Type 2 Pin. No exact comparison for this objec…

Lead alloy leg and foot of a figurine. The fragment is well-defined and shaped, and is bare of clothing following Classical styles. As the rest of the figurine is missing it is very difficult to accurately date. There is a possibility that it is Roman, however the level of preservation and what appear to be tiny traces of black paint suggest that it is more likely to be C16th or C17th. See WMID-B866E0 and CORN-EE5532 for a similar fragment. The length is 37mm, the width is 18mm thickness 12mm and the weight 11.04g.
