Cast copper alloy pelta-shaped mount with looped terminal with integral pointed lug that is 4 mm long at the back of the terminal. The mount is in the form of an expanded crescent or collar with moulded borders and radiating oblique lines that run between the borders. Between these transverse ridges there are trapezoidal cells that would originally have held enamel. Inside this crescent is a pelta-shaped section that still retains some of its red enamel inlay and arcs into a point that almost touches the terminal, creating two areas of crescentic openwork. The object is quite delicate…

Copper alloy stater of South Western uninscribed type, probably minted by the Durotriges of Dorset and Somerset in the first century AD. British Museum Catalogue Type: 2790; ABC 2175; Van Arsdell Type: 1290-1, which is dated from 30 BC to AD 10, but current thinking now dates them from the first half of the 1st century AD. The style of these coins derive originally from Gallo-Belgic gold staters which were copying Greek gold staters in circulation at the time, with the head of Apollo on the obverse, and a horse and chariot on the reverse. The evolution of this coin's design is: …

Glass oblong bead made from translucent royal blue glass with small bubbles visible in the structure and a small area of lighter blue glass. One end of the bead is flatter than the other, and the more rounded end is higher on one side than the other. The asymmetrical form comes from the winding process during manufacture or due to loss of heat in the furnace, causing an uneven flow of the molten glass. The bead is not decorated, but there are chips and scratches in the glass dispersed in a pattern of circumferential bands. The bead is 7.5 mm diameter, 9.1 mm length and 0.75g. The cent…

A flint barbed and tanged arrowhead. Triangular in plan, plano-convex in profile and in section. Made on a secondary flake of fine-textured, medium-brown flint with a small patch of cortex remaining on the dorsal face. A series of conchoidal ripples are clearly visible at the distal end of the ventral face although the striking platform and bulb of percussion and have been lost by the deliberate snapping off of the proximal end of the flake, to produce the desired triangular shape. This complete edge and the adjacent distal edge have then been blunted from the dorsal face by the remov…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fine-grained granite elvan muller or rubbing stone. The muller is oval in plan, with two rounded ends, and plano-convex in profile, with a convex upper face and a flat base. The flat, smooth base was used for rubbing, and the upper face convex so that it could be held and pushed across a base for grinding. The muller would have been used with a larger saddle quern to grind grain between the stones to make flour. The granite is fine grained and contains muscovite or mica, tourmaline and felspars. The soft felspars would work into hollows and the hard tourmaline would stand proud of the…

A complete greenstone hammerstone. A flattened oval in plan and in section and sub-rectangular in profile. The entire surface has been pecked to form a symmetrical, sub-cylindrical shape which would have been comfortable in the hand, with one face almost flat and the opposite face slightly convex. Both ends have been flattened and are slightly worn through use as a hammerstone. The flatter of the two faces is very slightly worn and may have been used for rubbing whilst the convex face is slightly pitted and may also have been used as a hammerstone. Jones and Taylor (2010) describ…

Blade fragment of a metabasic greenstone adze, semi-circular in plan and section and triangular in profile, with straight sides that widen slightly towards the blade end. About a third of the original tool survives, the blade end, while the longer but tapering butt end that would have been hafted is missing. The adze may have originally been about three times as long, judging from similar ethnographic parallels, in order to balance it with the wooden haft or handle. In profile the blade is plano-convex suggesting that the tool was used as an adze for carving and smoothing the wood rat…
