Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy rim fragment and body fragment from a bowl or cooking vessel with an internally bevelled rim that is triangular in profile and flush with the upper edge of the vessel. The body of the vessel curves downwards slightly, in profile, to suggest a reasonably deep straight-sided bowl, and the curvature of the rim, in plan, suggests a diameter of about 240 mm. The bevelled rim itself is 4 mm thick which then tapers to the body which is 2.3 mm thick. The internal surfaces of the fragments are smooth and the external surfaces are rough with many parallel horizontal lines whic…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fragment of the body of a cauldron from the base of the vessel where it curves under to meet the legs. There is a single raised, rounded cordon, 43 mm long and 3 mm thick, that runs horizontally along the body fragment, just below and almost parallel to the upper broken edge. These ribs are similar to the wire moulding on the Westcountry cauldrons illustrated by Butler and Green (2003) on page 165, nos.170-172, which are dated from the 15th to the 16th century. The straight-sided shape and flat underside of the vessel wall suggests that is might be more of an elongat…

Silver gilt finger ring with a moulded bezel in the form of a multi-lobed cross with eight raised granules around a central cross with equal pointed arms within a diamond-shaped border. On the opposite end of the hoop are a moulded pair of clasped hands with incised fingers and moulded transverse cuffs, typical of a fede or 'faith' ring. The decorative device of two hands clasped in love and trust is found all over Europe, on brooches, and on rings, such as this example. As the clasping of hands was part of the medieval betrothal ceremony, it is not surprising to find rings decorated …

Most thimbles of this period had pits spiralling round the circumference. Egan (2005) illustrates a thimble with similar vertical lines of pits up the sides and spiral pits around the he…

Silver cut half of a short cross penny of John (1199-1216), Class Vb1 (c.1205), moneyer Iohan, mint of Canterbury. The class is Vb1 (Wren 1992, pp.52-53), distinguished by the fact that on the obverse the hand holding the sceptre divides the obverse legend between the E and X of REX, whereas the majority of legends on all classes of short cross pennies are divided between the R and EX. Mass (2001) illustrates a very similar penny of Iohan of Canterbury, Class Vb1 in plate 51, no.1365, which is dated to 1205.
