Object type: CANDLE SNUFFER
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded copper-alloy mount from a candle snuffer (more accurately a wick-trimmer) of post-medieval date. The object is a thin irregular pentagon, formed of a rectangle with a triangular scalloped pointed terminal at one end. It is rectangular in cross-section at the square end of the mount; however the edges of the two long sides and the triangular terminal have been in part bevelled (creating a trapezoid cross-section for most of the object). The bevelling has been broken up by equally spaced stations. This has created two sections, of which two sides are bevelled but the corners …

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but corroded cast copper-alloy medieval seal matrix (c. 14th century AD). The matrix has a hexagonally-facetted conical handle with a low collar and a large rounded pierced terminal. The circular die (19.2mm by 18.4mm) depicts a hare riding a hound. The hare is blowing a hunting horn. Around the image is the inscription 'SOhOU ROBIN' ('Sohou' meaning 'I ride', a common medieval hunting cry). The lettering is fairly crude. This is a non-heraldic impersonal seal, and if the design is correct is a hunting satire, thus probably dating to the early 14th century AD.

Object type: TILE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of Roman box flue tile, which has a blue tinge on all sides due to exposure to heat. The largest external face marked with waved lines, before firing, for practical purposes. The corresponding internal face is plain, with one end raised to create the box nature of the tile (tile thickness 26.2mm, at raised end 34.7mm). The tile is coarseware, but the visible inclusions are less than 5mm², apart from one which is less than 10mm². There is rounding of the edges caused by wear while buried, as box tiles were designed to have clean edges to fit together better.
