Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Rutland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Medieval copper alloy bar mount consisting of a central circular section with a rivet hole and two thin arms, each ending in a knop, but one knop is now missing. A similar example is illustrated by Egan and Pritchard (1991, fig.134, no.1157), although this has additional rivet holes at either end. They suggest that copper alloy mounts were in use from the early 13th to early 15th century (ibid. 162). Length: 22.0mm, width: 8.0mm, thickness: 3.0mm, weight: 1.05g

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy leg from a large medieval or post-medieval cast cooking vessel. The object is very slightly curved and roughly 'T' shaped in profile, with a ridge running down the reverse face. The base of the leg is rounded and uneven, with no obvious foot. Where the leg would have attached to the vessel can be seen the remains of the break, which appears to have left a small, curved portion of the leg missing. The metal is greenish-grey in colour, with patches of brownish errosion. Length: 57.7mm, width: 41.9mm, thickness: 16.2mm Weight: 128.2g

Copper alloy Medieval circular buckle. The frame is circular in shape. The pin is attached to the frame via a loop of metal at one end. The pin is thick and fairly blunt, ruling out the possibility that this may instead have been a brooch. As is pointed out in Egan and Pritchard's Dress Accessories (1991, 64-65) there is occasionally some confusion between circular buckles and brooches of this period, but generally brooches are of a more elaborate constuction, with sharper pins, and with recesses into which the pin may fit. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 64) date buckles of this kind largel…

A flint thumbnail scraper, made from a retouched tertiary waste flake. The ventral face is very slightly convex and the bulb of purcussion appears to have been removed by a recent break. The dorsal face has three flaking scars, surrounded on three edges by semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch. The distal end has a slightly rolled edge resulting from later damage probably through ploughing or similar action. There is a large flake missing at the proximal end, which appears to have occured naturally following deposition. The flint is green-grey-whitish in colour, with a milky patina which has o…

Copper alloy shoe or knee buckle, c.1660-1720. The buckle is rectangular in shape with rounded corners. The upper face of the buckle is decorated with wide grooves along each of the longer sides, each containing within it a number of very small incised circles, some overlapping. The shorter sides are rounded and undecorated. Each end of the buckle is bent backwards slightly, causing the object to be 'c' shaped when viewed from the side. The frame has two holes drilled through each of the longer sides, which would have held a seperate spindle. This is now missing. The object is grey in…

Copper alloy single loop buckle, c.1500-1650. The buckle is 'C' shaped with expanded splayed feet protruding at either end of a narrowed and recessed strap bar. Attached to the middle of the strap bar, extending all the way round, is the heavily erroded remains of an iron pin. The buckle is undecorated. The metal is grey-brown in colour with patches of greenish errosion. There is a small portion of what appears to be oxidised iron attached to one corner of the upper face. The buckle appears to be a rounder variation on the similar sub-retangular buckles found in Whitehead, pp.28-9. …

Biconical lead steelyard weight. The remains of an iron bar running through from the apex of the weight to the base can be seen, but this is now heavily erroded. Several lines have been engraved into the weight, but none of these forms legible writing. The weight is whitish-brown in colour and fairly erroded. A number of similar globular and biconical examples have already been recorded on the database from Suffolk, including: SF-F6662B, SF-F66CC2, SF-F6878E, SF-03C88C.
