A fragment of a larger flint tool, possibly an axe or adze of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. It is formed on a secondary flake - rough pebble cortex still remains on the dorsal face. It is roughly triangular in shape, but was clearly much larger originally as there is an abrupt, rough break at the proximal end. Several large, crude flakes have been removed from the ventral face and there is invasive, sub-parallel retouch covering most of the dorsal face. The left side of the dorsal face is much steeper than the right side. Both faces and the break are heavily patinated. Damage a…

An incomplete Neolithic polished flint handaxe. It is long and roughly oval in shape, but expanding slightly towards the blade end, and plano-convex in cross section with a slightly higher central ridge on one face. There is a small amount of invasive, scaled, low angle retouch along the sides and a chunk is missing from one side of the blade end. This break is heavily patinated suggesting that it occurred prior to deposition and possibly as a result of use. The flint, where it is exposed at the butt end, is light grey in colour, but the rest of the surface is very heavily patinated a…

An incomplete flint flaked and polished axe of probable late Neolithic date. The axe is an elongated flame-shape, sub-oval in cross-section. It is unusually long and narrow, but not outside the range of know forms. There is invasive, scaled, low angle retouch on both faces with limited polishing visible in places at the wider end. There is a thick orange-stained patina covering most of the surface, but with small amounts of post-deposition damage around the edges where the patina has been removed. Polishing on only parts of the surface can be indicative of a late Neolithic date, …

A complete flaked axe/adze of probable Neolithic date. It is ovoid in shape and lenticular in cross-section, but slightly thicker on one face towards the pointed outer end. There is covering, flaked retouch on both faces. A small amount of cortex remains in the centre towards the butt end of one face and at the outer tip of the other face. The surface is heavily patinated and orange stained. There is some rolling on the edges. Lawrence Billington (pers. com.) comments that it '... is likely to be Neolithic rather than Mesolithic or earlier, it could be a rough-out that was original…

A fragment of a Neolithic flint polished axehead. It is roughly rectangular in shape and plano-convex in cross section. The outer face has small flaking scars in several places, but the area surrounding these has been smoothly polished, producing an almost flat surface. There is a rough, stepped break to one end, presumably the result of the impact that fractured the flake from the rest of the axe. The reverse face is covered with multiple scaled flaking scars running in different directions - possibly representing an attempt to sharpen the edges for re-use. The flint is a light, opaq…

An incomplete Neolithic flint flaked and polished axehead. It is roughly ovoid in shape, becoming narrower towards the butt end, and strongly plano-convex in cross section. Both faces have multiple scaled flaking scars running in different directions. These are still visible in several places, although their upper edges and the surface surrounding them has been polished. A small amount of pebble cortex survives in the centre of each face. Both faces are highly polished at the cutting end producing a cutting edge that remains fairly sharp. There is an abrupt break across the butt end, …

An incomplete Neolithic flint axehead. It is elongated with straight sides and rounded ends, the cutting end wider than the butt end. Both faces are convex and covered with small flaking scars. The surface around these scars has been highly polished and they are positioned at different levels to one another, suggesting that most are original features of the object rather than accidental damage. Inwards curving notches have been removed on one face just behind the butt end from either side, perhaps to aid hafting. There is some damage to one side of the cutting edge. The flint is milky…

A Neolithic polished (and reworked) flint axehead. It is roughly triangular in shape and plano-convex in cross section. It expands slightly towards the blade end, which curves outwards and there is an abrupt break across the narrow butt end. Around 60% of each face features the original polished surface, but there is scaled, invasive, low-angle retouch along each side and a few smaller removals across the blade end, suggesting that the axe was modified at some point to allow further use - perhaps after it was damaged. The flint is light grey in colour, but the surface is heavily patin…

A fragment of a Neolithic flaked and polished axe. It is sub-triangular in shape and oval in cross-section with an abrupt break across the wider end. Both faces are covered with invasive, scaled retouch and a small amount of polishing is visible on one face between the scars. There are small patches of irregular retouch around the break on both faces, suggesting that the object may have been reworked for reuse following damage. The flint is a reddish-brown colour with little patination. Length: 93.75mm, width: 50.76mm, thickness: 27.44mm, weight: 131.87g

A complete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe. It is sub-trapezoidal in shape; long and narrow, but becoming slightly wider blade end. It is roughly lozenge-shaped in cross-section with a raised central ridge running longitundinally across both faces. Both faces have been reshaped using invasive, scaled retouch with small patches of cortex remaining in places. There appear to be attempts at transverse 'tranchet' flake removal on both faces of the cutting edge. The surface is covered with thick orange stained cortex. The darker flint beneath is partially visible on one face. Length: 15…

Fragment of a copper alloy Bronze Age flanged axe or palstave. The object is very worn and pitted, with smoothed edges. The butt end is missing, all that remains is the blade. The cutting edge curves strongly outwards, and the sides of the blade curve inwards slightly, creating a fan-like shape. Although the object is very worn, the beginnings of side flanges can be seen along the sides on both faces towards the break. Because the central portion of the object is missing there is no evidence of a stop-ridge, so the object could be either a flanged axe or palstave. Given this it will ce…

A fragment of a copper-alloy possible Bronze Age axe. It is trapezoidal in shape, rectangular in cross-section and wedge-shaped in profile - tapering towards one end, which remains relatively sharp. There is a rough break across the opposite end and also probably along one side which is straighter than the other, perhaps indicating a deliberate cut. The surface is heavily corroded and these breaks are very well worn. Because of the damage and corrosion it is uncertain whether this is definitely a Bronze Age axe and if so what type of axe this may be. It should be noted, however, …

A complete Neolithic finely worked polished stone axehead. It is an elongated sub-triangular shape and oval in cross-section, with straight slightly outwards curving sides, a narrow, rounded butt and a blade end that curves outwards only very slightly. It is composed of a coarse-grained basic intrusive rock that has probably undergone metamorphism, speckled white and blue-grey in colour. There is a patch of orange-brown straining on one face. It survives in good condition with only a small amount of damage to the butt end. Dr Emily Banfield (pers. com.) kindly comments …

A reworked Neolithic polished stone reworked axehead. It is roughly oval in shape and plano-convex in cross section. Several areas on both faces feature the original polished surface and this is particularly apparent at the butt end of one face. The outer end appears to have broken away, however, and the remaining portion of the axe has been retouched with large, scaled, invasive flakes to allow it to be reused. The stone is light grey in colour, perhaps some kind of flint, with some patination and patches of high gloss in places. The original polished axe would have been of Neolit…

Description: A fragment of a late Bronze Age socketed axe. Only the blade end and the inner part of the socket survives. The fragment is rectangular in cross-section, tapering towards the blade. The blade edge curves outwards and is damaged in places with a notch to one side. Each side of the fragment flares outwards towards the blade and gently inwards towards the break. A slight casting seam can be seen running longitudinally along the centre of one side, but this has largely worn away on the other side. The break has a rounded, rectangular depression in the centre, which is all that…
