An incomplete cast copper-alloy fragment originating from an Anglo-Scandinavian harness cheekpiece of Williams' type 2, dating c. 1000-1100. Around 30-40% of the object survives intact, the symmetrical opposing side of the object and integral attachment link (where the cheekpiece would have directly attached to the bridle) are both missing in old breaks. A complete copper alloy medieval buckle plate. It consists of a long rectangular strip of sheet metal, which has been folded in two widthways. Each outer end curves inwards slightly and there is an in situ iron rivet holding the outers ends of both halves together. There is a hole in the centre of the inner edge holding an in situ simple copper alloy wire pin. Plates such as this one were attached to range of buckle frame styles in use from the mid-13th to 14th century. Length: 23.41mm, width: 17.38mm, thickness: 5.57mm, weight: 6.87g
