An incomplete gilded copper alloy Roman British plate brooch. The surviving section is circular in shape with breaks around the outer edge, a convex outer face and flat reverse. The outer face has a small recessed circle in the centre, c.6.2mm in diameter, surrounded by two raised concentric circles, the inner wider than the outer and then two circles of small, parallel, diagonal lines. The area surrounding this decoration contains gilding. The centre of the inner circle is roughly finished suggesting that a glass or gem stone was attached here originally. To the reverse both the pin …

An incomplete copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative double-lug brooch. The head is semi-cylindrical in shape with an open reverse and rounded outer ends. The bow is D-shaped in cross-section and tapers to a blunt, worn break at its lower end. The lower bow and catch-plate are missing. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded. An incomplete copper alloy Roman headstud brooch. The head is narrow and cylindrical in shape, its outer face slightly flattened with a transverse slot in the centre of the reverse where a pin would have sat originally. The damaged remains of a headloop can be seen extending from its upper edge. The bow is strongly curved in profile and rectangular in cross-section. A very corroded headstud is visible on the outer face of the upper end of the bow. The lower bow appears to be decorated, perhaps with longitudinal grooves, but this is too corroded to be seen clearly. The bow terminates i…

A fragment of a copper alloy late Iron Age or Roman brooch. All that survives is the lower half of the brooch. The bow is narrow, D-shaped in cross-section and tapers gradually to a small rounded foot knob at the foot. The outer face of the bow is decorated with two incised downwards pointing chevrons just above the lower terminal. To the rear is a roughly triangular catch-plate with hooked outer edge. The surface of the metal is slightly corroded and the breaks are worn. The presence of a small, simple foot knob suggests that this is likely to be part of a Colchester derivative br…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman probably rivet. The head has truncated conical lower end, a narrow cylindrical central section and a rounded upper face ?decorated (or perhaps just the result of casting) with an irregular spiral groove and some small indentations in the centre. The stem is circular in cross-section and terminates in an abrupt fresh break. There are traces of a white metal coating on the surface of the head. The metal survives in good condition with a shiny green patina. The thickness of the stem suggests that this a rivet or stud rather than a hairpin. See the grou…

A fragment of a copper alloy early Roman bracelet/armlet. Only a small section of the original 9.90mm wide strip of metal survives. Its outer face is decorated with two longitudinal raised beaded lines, each flanked on either side by a fine parallel groove and a shallow longitudinal groove is positioned behind each outer edge. There is a line of small incised dots along one edge of the outer face, but these may be the result of surface corrosion. The breaks are both fresh and relatively straight suggesting that the fragment may have been deliberately cut. There are faint traces of a w…
