A fragment of a copper alloy late Iron Age or Roman brooch. Only the lower half of the brooch survives. The bow is narrow, sub-triangular in cross-section with a longitudinal ridge running down the centre of its outer face and it tapers gradually to a rounded point at the foot. To the rear is a roughly triangular catch-plate with its hooked outer edge missing. The surface of the metal is corroded and the breaks are worn. There is no foot knob suggesting that this is likely to be part of a Colchester brooch or one of the Colchester derivatives with a date range of around AD 25-120…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman Polden Hill Colchester derivative brooch. Each wing has a convex outer face and concave reverse, with a pierced disc-shaped end cap across each end. The outer face of each wing is decorated with a transverse line across the outer end and a diagonal line running between this at the bow. The remains of a rear-facing hook projects from the centre of the upper end of the head and would have secured the pin chord in place originally. The bow is slightly humped in profile, D-shaped in cross-section and tapers to a blunt point at its lower end. The lower tip …

A fragment of a medieval gilded copper alloy annular brooch. The fragment is curved in shape, comprising around c.15% of the original brooch. The base consists of a curved strip from the outer face of which an elongated collet project to either end, with a smaller knop projecting from between these. The outer end of each collet has a small circular indentation in its centre containing whitish material. Traces of gilding can be seen in places on the surface. The breaks are well worn. Similar examples were found at Meols (Griffiths et al. 2007, 143, particularly no's: 1720, 1722 &…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative double lug brooch. The head is semi-cylindrical in shape with a concave reverse. The outer face of each wing appears undecorated. A double pierced lug projects from the centre of the reverse where a sprung pin fitting would have been attached originally. The bow is triangular in cross-section with a narrow raised ridge running longitudinally down the centre of its outer face, becoming more pronounced towards the upper end to form a slight crest when viewed in profile. The upper bow is curved in profile and the lower bow straight, …

An incomplete copper alloy Roman double lug Colchester derivative brooch. The head is semi-cylindrical with an open reverse. There is a double pierced lug situated in the centre of the reverse of the head, which holds the in situ copper alloy pin spring and chord in place. The upper part of the pin itself also survives. The bow is slightly curved in profile, D-shaped in cross-section and tapers to a point at the foot. The outer face of the bow is decorated with a beaded longitudinal ridge. Description: An incomplete gilded silver medieval annular brooch. It has four sides of equal length, each one curving inwards slightly. At the junction between three of the sides there is a rounded knop and at the fourth junction a constricted bar flanked by a moulded strip on either side where the pin would have sat. The outer faces of the junction knops are decorated with engraved dots and the lower knop is divided into two by a central groove. The position of the pin notch suggests that the brooch was intended to be worn in a lozenge rather than square position. The outer face of e…

The outer face of each wing is decorated with a moulded crescent, its sides raised, centres recessed, and each with an incised ring-and-dot in its centre. A rear-facing hook would have extended from the centre of the upper edge of the head originally to secure the pin fitting, but is now missing. The bow is humped in profile and oval in cross-section, tapering slightly to a worn break at the lower end. The catch-plate is missing. The surfac…

A fragment of a copper alloy possible Roman brooch. The fragment is an irregular, flattened shape with raised straight lines forming lozenge one face. There are faint traces of a white metal coating on both faces. Although it is too fragmentary for its original form and function to be certain, it may be part of the central section of a Roman plate brooch. Length: 11.63mm, width: 11.45mm, thickness: 1.40mm, weight: 0.67g

A fragment of a copper alloy Roman brooch. Only the lower bow survives. This is straight with a moulded double foot knob at its lower end and two transverse mouldings across the outer face at its upper end. To the reverse there is the damaged remains of a catch-plate. The surface of the metal is corroded and the breaks are well worn. The style of the foot suggests that this is from a hinged Colchester derivative or a later developed style like the headstud or trumpet. As such as broad Conquest to mid-3rd century date range is suggested here. Length: 20.86mm, width: 5.30mm, thick…

A fragment of a copper alloy Roman brooch. Only the lower bow and foot of the brooch survive. The bow is D-shaped in cross-section and undecorated. Its upper end has been bent slightly towards the rear. It tapers slightly towards the foot and terminates in a small rounded foot knob. To the rear there is a complete triangular catch-plate with hooked outer edge. The break is well worn. A fragment from a copper alloy early medieval cruciform brooch. Only one globular knob from the top or side of the brooch's head survives. There is a narrow constriction below it followed by a damaged plate that would have hooked around the head of the brooch one on side and been secured to the front of the head at the other side. The remains of a hole where an attachment stud would have sat can be seen, but this end of plate is now missing. Top and side knobs were generally integral, but occasionally separate knobs like this one were used (MacGregor and Bolick 1993, 96). Crucifor…
