Object type: BRIDLE BIT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy probably Iron Age or early Roman bridle bit. This is likely to be part of the central link from a two- or three-link bit. It consists of an oval-shaped loop, circular in cross-section with a flattened circular swelling extending from one end and a short, narrow point from one side of the other end. There appears to be a break in the centre of the outer face of the circular swelling, from where another loop probably extended originally. The point projecting from the other side may be the result of mis-casting as the outer edge of this side is also irregular in…

A complete silver medieval penny (possibly a contemporary copy) of Henry III, dating to the period AD 1250-75. Class 5. Minted by uncertain moneyer in Canterbury. Thick flan and apparently miss-spelt moneyer - possibly indicates a contemporary copy of Walter of Canterbury of whom Class 5 copies do exist (see North 1995, BNJ 65, 97).

Object type: PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy pin or bracelet of probable Roman date. The terminal is an elongated conical shape and is decorated with approx. 12 ribs. Extending from the inner end of this is a section of circular cross-sectioned stem/hoop terminating in an abrupt break. There is a slight longitudinal groove/seam running the full length of one side. The narrow stem suggests that the object may be part of a pin or Roman or possibly early medieval date, although no precise parallels have been found for this function. Alternatively it may be part of a late Roman penannular bracelet. See e…

A complete lead vessel repair or pot mend. The object is an irregular oval shape with a groove running around the centre of the outer edge where it would have sat within a break in a vessel originally. There is a circular indentation in the centre of one face. Lacking diagnostic details only a broad Roman to post-medieval date range can be suggested.
