Description: A silver Roman denarius that has been incorporated into a finger ring as the bezel. The hoop is rectangular in cross-section, flaring at the shoulders with a longitudinal groove along the centre of the outer face of each shoulder. The outer end of each shoulder has been soldered to the reverse of the denarius. The whole object including the coin then appears to have been coated with white metal. A recessed rectangular panel is visible to one side of the inner face of the rear of the hoop and possible lettering can be seen here, but this is almost entirely covered by a fold…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper-alloy strap fitting of uncertain date. The object is a horizontally flattened, sub-oval loop shape with one side slightly straighter than the other. It has a pointed oval cross-section. There are areas of greater wear on each longer side, perhaps where a strap was attached originally, suggesting that it may be a section of horse gear. The surface of the metal is heavily worn and corroded. Without further diagnostic details the object is difficult to date precisely as loops such as these were used as strap and harness fittings from the Iron Age onwards.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. The object is a sub-circular disc shape with a straight break across one side. There are no details visible on either face to indicate that it is a coin. It may be a fragment of metalworking debris or have broken from a larger object. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded.

Two lead truncated conical weights or spindle whorls of uncertain Roman to post-medieval date.  Objects such as these were used for a long period of time for a variety of functions with little change in form. They may be crude spindle whorls, but seem more likely to be weights are are too irregular in shape. 1. Diameter: 19.77mm, thickness: 11.53mm, weight: 16.07g (diameter of central hole: c.7.35mm) 2. A complete copper-alloy bead of uncertain Roman to post-medieval date. It is a flattened spherical shape with a circular hole through the centre c.6.4mm in diameter. A complete Roman to post-medieval lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface. There is a central circular hole, 8.89mm in diameter. There scratches, marks and a raised pellet on the curved upper surface, although these do not appear to form a distinct pattern. The metal survives in good condition. Undecorated spindle whorls were in use from the Roman to post-medieval period. The small diameter of the hole may indicate a date towards the earlier of this chronology. A complete lead weight of uncertain date. The object is disc-shaped and perforated with a small off-centre hole.
