A perforated stone implement of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is sub-ovoid in shape with one rounded end and one narrower, angular end. There is a cylindrical perforation situated behind the narrower end, c.31mm in diameter. There are linear marks on both faces and around the wider end indicative of impact during use. It is made from a fine grained, light yellow, sedimentary stone. The precise function of these objects is debated, although they are frequently described as 'mace heads'. Dating is also uncertain. Although traditionally thought to …

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint bifacially worked implement of probable Neolithic date. It is an elongated sub-oval shape and symmetrical pointed oval in cross-section. There is covering, scaled retouch on both faces with some finer retouch along the sides and ends. Patchy brown patination covers a small area of flaking in the centre of one face, while there is limited patination elsewhere (perhaps suggesting that an earlier object may have been reworked?). There is very little signs of wear and a little rolling in places on the edges. The general consensus seems to be that this is an implement…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete retouched flint blade of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. A elongated tertiary blade with rounded ends. A light coloured, translucent flint with medium patination on both faces. There are patches of crude, short, abrupt potential retouch along both edges, which has removed this patination, suggesting later re-working of an older re-discovered blade (although the crude nature of this retouch suggests it may be partially or completely due to natural damage). A perforated stone implement of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is roughly oval in shape with one rounded end and one straight end and is pointed oval in cross-section. There is a small circular hour-glass-shaped perforation through the centre. There is a small amount of damage to both faces and around the edges. The stone appears to be igneous of uncertain origin. A large flint cylindrical core of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is an a large, elongated shape, sub-triangular in cross-section. There are long, narrow blade scars on one face and smaller flake scars on the others running in a different direction. Working is limited and undiagnostic so a broad date range is suggested here. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe. It is sub-trapezoidal in shape; long and narrow, but becoming slightly wider blade end. It is roughly lozenge-shaped in cross-section with a raised central ridge running longitundinally across both faces. Both faces have been reshaped using invasive, scaled retouch with small patches of cortex remaining in places. There appear to be attempts at transverse 'tranchet' flake removal on both faces of the cutting edge. The surface is covered with thick orange stained cortex. The darker flint beneath is partially visible on one face. Length: 15…

A flint blade of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. There are three long, thin, parallel scars on the dorsal face and cortex remaining on the left-hand side.
