A fragment of a clay pipe stem of late 17th century date. The stem has a faint maker's mark which has been identified as that of William Pearce of Marlborough, Wiltshire, who was operating c. AD 1690. The mark is partly contained in a cartouche with tapering point at the base with two pellets or stars either side of the point. The upper portion of the mark is unclear. The mark reads WIL[L] PEARC[E]. The clay pipe fragment was found in a garden on land previously used as an orchard. This button is probably from the uniform of a member of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Police, which were operational in 1847 until they were absorbed by the North British Railway in 1865. An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Polden HIll style brooch, dating from c. AD 80-120. The brooch retains both wings which terminate in end caps, pierced to take the spring axis bar. The pin is broken and missing. The bow is angular in form with a rectangular recess at the top of the bow which whould have contained enamelling, but this is now missing. A fragment of a cast copper alloy saucer brooch of early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date, dating from c. AD 450-550. The fragment (the larger of the two in the image, on the right hand side) has geometric patterns in a border around a central double-armed cross. There is traces of silvering. The reverse of the fragment retains part of the broken pin lug. Interestingly, this fragment re-fits with a fragment found at Detectival 2018 (which also matched to a third piece found in 2018) and donated to the Museum. A base sherd from a Roman ceramic vessel, a Samian ware cup, dating to the period AD 145-175. The fabric is fine and hard with a glossy dark red slip on both external and internal surfaces. The base retains some of the pedestal ring. There is a maker's stamp on the base, identified by Paul Booth as die 3a of Albucius II of Lezoux, France, a major centre for Samian production in central Gaul. The form is likely to be a small cup - Dragendorff 33 (see British Museum Collection 1937,0316.2 for a complete example). Many thanks to Paul for his identification of this object.

A complete but worn post medieval copper-alloy one ounce weight with two portcullis stamps to indicate that the weight was made and sold in Westminster (a portcullis is part of the arms of the City of Westminster), as Westminster was outside the jurisdiction of the Founders' Company whose stamp does not appear on this weight. The object has a light green patina. See SUR-6D6B61 for a similar example on this database. c. AD 1758 to 1826. The weight weighs 0.845 ounces - the damage and wear would suggest the original weight to have been 1 ounce.

Description: An incomplete silver gilt annular brooch of medieval date. The brooch has an annular frame, triangular in section with a decorative projection in the form of an animal's (possibly a snake's) head on one side. A complete but worn copper alloy 'three circles' type jetton of Tournai, dating to the reign of Louis XI (1461-83) or Charles VIII (1483-1497). The obverse depicts three circles each containing a quatrefoil; in each angle is a fleur de lis. The legends are hard to decipher - they may have a religious or nationalistic motto or be nonsensical. The reverse depicts a broad ended cross pattee with a flower in each angle. Mitchener (1988: 211) no. 607.

A worn and incomplete large cast copper alloy Iron Age enamelled flat-ring terret, dating from c. 50 BC to c. AD 70. The terret ring retains over a third of the flat decorated ring, a short length of the strap bar and one roundel. The flattened ring of the terret is decorated with elaborate 'S' shaped La Tene style scrolls, conjoined into moustache-like motifs connected by alternating top and bottom scroll arms. A complete and hardly worn cast copper alloy late Middle Bronze Age/early Late Bronze Age palstave axehead of unlooped type. There is not much difference in width between septum and blade; the particular narrowness of the blade suggests an ancillary use as a chisel. An incomplete Post Medieval cast copper-alloy toy musket, c. 1600-1640 AD. Forsyth and Egan Type 5, Design 4. The toy musket is only missing the lower portion of its handle. The musket seems to have been cast in one piece, with a fishtail butt, a plain facetted barrel and angular trigger guard. There is a pronounced ridge at the breech which curves around to form a wedge-shaped pan. The stock and barrel are plain with no decoration.

A complete copper alloy pocket or portable sundial dating to the post-medieval period (c. AD 1600-1800). Circular in plan, and made up of two annular bands which have been soldered together internally where a drawn wire semi-circular loop attaches them together at their outer edges. A complete cast copper alloy strap end of early-medieval date (c. AD 750 - 950). The strap end belongs to Thomas' Class A, Type 2. It is sub-rectangular in shape tapeing to a zoomorphic terminal consisting of an animal's head with ears, eye-ridges and flat snout all depicted. A complete silver octagonal button of later post-medieval date. The button has an engraved design of a four-petaled flower with smaller lobes around the main flower head. There is a scalloped linear emphasis around the outer edge of the button. On the reverse of the button is a silver loop, soldered on to the body. Many buttons of this type and with similar designs have been recorded on this database. As these button date from c. AD 1725-1800, they do not currently qualify as Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996. .
