A near complete but worn cast copper-alloy and silver Hiberno-Scandinavian-style Early Medieval strap-end, dating to the latter ninth to eleventh centuries. The strap-end is roughly tongue-shaped with a split end for the insertion of the strap, a zoomorphic terminal consisting of an open-mouthed beast with large protruding eyes, and a flat circular region between these which has incised decoration on both sides, featuring a roundel and separate panels of interlace. The inscribed decoration is identical on each side of the plate. This consists of, in the roundel, an equal-armed cross of…

A complete cast copper alloy strap end of early-medieval date (c. AD 750 - 950). The strap end belongs to Thomas' Class A, Type 2. It is sub-rectangular in shape tapeing to a zoomorphic terminal consisting of an animal's head with ears, eye-ridges and flat snout all depicted. The main plate is decorated with a simple cross-hatched design. At the rear of the strap end are two holes for rivets to attach the strap end to a leather strap - the rivets are now missing and the holes are damaged. The reverse of the strap end has a recessed plate at the rear end (so the strap) and is otherwise…

An incomplete sheet copper alloy buckle plate strap end of medieval date. The plate is broadly tongue-shaped in plan with one straight and one pointed terminal. The upper surface of the plate is decorated with a pattern of engraved zigzags ('rocker-arm') in a herring bone arrangement. There are two separate copper alloy rivets either side of a circular hole; an indentation through this hole suggests wear from a pin. The reverse of the sheet is plain - this is probably part of a two-piece, composite strap end / buckle dating to the period AD 1250-1400. For a strap-end with similar deco…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval strap end dating to c. AD 1390-1420. The strap end is also known as a box chape; it is of the 'lyre shaped' group as found at Meols (Griffiths et. al. 2007, Pl. 17, No. 765). The strap was fitted into the square socket through which are two rivets. On one face of the box is an incised floral design, while the other side is undecorated. At the front of the chape is a narrowed neck which leads to a flanged transverse bar that forms the base of the frame - the lyre shaped openwork terminal of the chape is broken and missing. Similar examples are r…

An incomplete lead alloy late early medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) tongue-shaped strap-end of Thomas' Class E Type 1. The strap end is tongue shaped in plan with heavily moulded decoration in the classic Winchester style. The attachment end of the strap end is missing. The reverse is flat, plain and undecorated. The decoration combines zoomorphic and foliate elements, with a sub-rectangular feline-like head at the top and simplified vine-scroll and looping tendrils below and to the side. A number of strap fittings, brooches and dress accessories are known in lead from Anglo-Scandinavia…

A near-complete cast copper strap end of the early medieval period, dating to c. AD 750-900. Thomas Class A Type 1, with zoomorphic beast snout terminal and paired rivet holes at the bifurcated end. One of the rivet holes is incomplete. The decoration on the main panel of the strap end is crude, consisting of lines of saltires down each edge with a third row off-centre, overlapping some of the external slatires. The head of the creature is poorly defined with mouldings to indicate ears (flat on head) and the snout. The reverse is flat, plain and undecorated.

A complete cast copper alloy zoomorphic strap end of early-medieval date. The strap end has a symmetrical interlace design in a sub-rectangular panel towards the rear end where the metal splits to form a sleeve into which the strap could be fitted and secured by way of two iron rivets, which remain intact. The front of the strap end is moulded into an animal's head, with rounded ears, a Y-shaped forehead, small indentations for eyes and a rounded snout. The eye holes may have held a decorative insert, now absent. The reverse of the strap end is plain with traces of silvering evident. …

Description: An incomplete Early Medieval silver strap-end dating to c. AD 750-950. The strap-end is tongue-shaped with a pointed terminal. The plate tapers inwards from a 14.8 mm to 8.6 mm in width before it terminates to a point. The top of the plate is rectangular and has one central rivet hole with a diameter of 3.2 mm. There are some incised lines around the rivet hole, but these are worn, and it is uncertain if this is part of the decoration of the strap-end or lines caused by wear and damage. The rest of the plate tapers inwards and has a decorated motif on the surface. The zoo…

An incomplete cast copper alloy probable strap end of medieval date (c. AD 1300-1400). The strap end is in the form of an annular buckle with integrally cast strap and projecting knop fromthe outside of the frame. The area around the back of the buckle, where the strap is located, does appear to have an old break to it and it is likely that this is the very end of a larger strap end although no direct comparisons were found in the available literature.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap end of medieval date (c. 14th century). The strap end is a composite piece with central spacer that is sandwiched between two thin copper alloy plates. An incomplete cast copper alloy strap end dating to the early medieval period. The strap end is a Thomas Class A1 with zoomorphic snout, flat squared ears and a central panel bearing an interlaced creature in the Trewhiddle style. A curved panel immediately beneath the two rivets holes (now broken across their width) appears to bear a fruit-like motif, but it is partly obscured by wear and a bend in the terminal. The reverse of the strap end is flat, plain and undecorated. This style of strap end is dated to the 9th century AD, however their use probably spans a few decades either side.

A complete copper alloy strap end of medieval date. The strap end is a simple affair, being tongue-shaped in plan with an opening at the wide end for the insertion of a leather strap, which would have been secured in place by two iron rivets, which are extant. It appears that the strap end is formed from two sheets of copper alloy, but there is no evidence for a forked spacer within, a trait of medieval composite strap ends. The only decoration is a simple border of tiny punched pellets which have been gilded. The underside of the strap end is plain and undecorated. Suggested …
