Description: An ornate base silver mount dating to the 19th century or later. The mount is sub-rectangular in plan with very rounded narrow edges. At the base of the mount on one long edge is an expanded foot, bevelled in section having a flat back and sloping front. At the top of the mount, in the centre of the long edge, is a trefoil-shaped projection. Within the centre of the mount is elaborate moulded decoration consisting of a central trefoil flower bud above a long pelleted stem. The flower bud has scrolled and pelleted decoration within each petal. Protruding from t…

A complete lead alloy mount / pommel cap / knob / handle of uncertain but possible Roman or medieval date. The mount has a broadly flat top with nine crudely faceted edges below. A second and third row of facets narrow down towards the thin end of the mount which has a circular aperture in the base, apparently for mounting upon something. Overall the mount is crudely made. The purpose is uncertain.

An incomplete cast copper alloy mount of Roman or medieval date. The pin-head is cylindrical with undecorated disc ends and a body grooved lengthwise around its outside, giving the object a barrel-like appearance. Centred on the underside of the head is the remains of an iron tang or shank, almost square in section. The patina of the object suggests a Roman or medieval date, and the iron tang/shank could indicate that this is a fitting for a knife (knife cap) or possibly a furniture mount. Parallels have been hard to find, only one similar object appeared in searches on this database…

A complete cast copper alloy post-medieval mount dating to the later 16th or 17th century AD (c. AD 1550-1700). The strap fitting mount is in the form of an elongated acorn with trefoil flare at the terminal of the base of the acorn shell. The shell of the acornhas a stippled decoration that is now very worn. Traces of gilding survives. On the reverse are two integrally cast spikes to affix the mount to a leather strap. The mount is 26.7mm long, 10.1mm wide and weighs 2.28 grams. Similar examples of this mount is illustrated by Read (2001: 37) which he dates to to AD 1…

A complete but misshapen gold finger ring or circular fitting with a plain and simple hoop. There is no decoration either internally nor externally. The inside of the band is rough compared to the outside suggesting this may be a fitting for something like a cane or knife rather than a finger ring. The internal diameter of the ring is 21.8mm (max), width 5.2mm, thickness 0.9mm, weight 3.2 grams. The ring is probably of late medieval to modern date however its undiagnostic nature makes it impossible to securely date it to pre-1709. As such it falls outside the provisions of the Treasur…

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable Roman date. The mount is kite-shaped in plan with semi-circular recesses at either short corner and elongated recesses at either long end. There are two crudely executed deep parallel linear incisions down the centre of the length of the mount and around the outside edges. The reverse of the mount has a mass of iron corrosion protruding from the centre, preseumably the remains of an iron shank. No direct comparison could be found for this object however it shares similarities with belt / harness mounts of Roman date.

A complete but worn copper alloy mount of medieval date. The mount is bar-shaped in plan with pointed terminals displaying worn zoomorphic features possibly indended to be birds' heads with downward curved beaks and bulbous eyes. In the centre of the mount is a raised boss with a square aperture. The underside of the mount is hollow. This may be one of several fittings, no direct comparision could be easily identified, it could be a knife quillion or a strap/harness/furniture fitting. Suggested date AD 1100-1400.

An incomplete cast copper alloy mount or strap fitting of post-medieval date. The mount head is a very slightly domed sexfoil in plan with moulded grooves through each petal to its opposite, and raised lentoid bosses on each petal tip. The reverse of the head is hollow and has the remains of four integral shanks which would have secured the mount in place. These are largely missing due to old breaks. This object may have adorned a casket or box or due to its size, maybe a horse harness.

An incomplete copper alloy decorative mount or fitting of early Medieval date, c. 12th century AD (AD 1100-1200). The object is formed from a sem-circular plate of copper alloy, gilded on the upper surface. The plate has alternating rounded panels of openwork and solid panels decorated with human face-masks. Between the panels are several smaller holes presumably for rivets, two of which survive. These rivets stand proud of the front surface and have been gilded, suggesting that they are decorative rather than functional. Each rivet is cone shaped and terminates with a rounded knop.…

A cast copper alloy furniture fitting of post-medieval date. The fitting is in the form of an equal-armed cros with slightly expanded terminals. There is no decoration visible on the front of the mount. On there reverse of the mount are four sunken hollows at the end of each arm, all filled with the remains of an unidentified substance presumabely to secure the mount in place. The form of the cross and the colour of the metal strongly suggests a post-medieval, if not later date. The mount probably adorned an item of furniture of casket / chest. Suggested date: AD 1500-1800.

A complete but worn cast copper alloy mount dating to the early-medieval (Anglo-Sacndinavian) period. The mount is a bar wirth raised mouldeding and ribs and an abstract zoomorphic snout, similar to those seen on strap ends and stirrup terminals of the 11th century AD. There is a recessed panel in the centre of the mount with a rivet hole although no rivet remains. At the rear of the mount is a second rivet hole this time full of iron corrosion from the extant iron rivet. The underside of the mount is flat, plain and undecorated. This is probably a strap fitting of 11th century date.

A cast copper alloy mount or fitting of probable 11th century date. The mount has a central bar with triangular terminals, boradly 'bow-tie' shaped. It has rivet holes on the outer corners of both terminals, and is flat in section. The mount is poorly preserved, suffering from extensive surface corrosion, however the outline of the raised decoration can still be seen. The decortation appears to consist of a round device with a cross over and extending beyond its confines. This is repeated at the opposing terminal. A double linear, or pillar, connects the two circular features. A ver…

A cast copper alloy mount of uncertain use or date. The mount is disc-shaped in plan and the front is crudely decorated with multiple incised vertical and horizontal lines arranged to be akin to a cross crosslet-type design. On the reverse of the mount is a thick integral shank that may have fitted into a leather strap. There is also a short, C-sectioned projection from one edge of the reverse. This appears incomplete so it is uncertain what its purpose is, however it may be the remains of a hinge, possibly for a horse harness pendant, with the disc being the strap fitting mount. Su…
