TREASURE CASE 2018 T10. Description: A complete gold finger ring of Roman date, Guiraud Type 2c (Guiraud 1989: 181-185) dating from the late first to mid-third century AD (c. AD 75-250). The finger ring has aN oval Cornelian intaglio depicting a bird (probably an eagle) advancing left over a solid line that acts as the ground. The bird's wings are tucked back and extending over its tail. The head of the eagle is obscured by a crack in the stone but the beak appears to be open. A gold 'posy' finger ring of post-medieval date, now distorted and with a broken hoop. The finger ring has a thick D-shaped section with no external decoration but as is usual for these rings there is an internal inscription. This inscription reads ' I love and like my choyce' in a lower case script. A maker's mark consisting of capital W in a sub-rectantgular cartouche above a simlar cartouche filled with six pellets preceeds the inscription. An incomplete cast copper-alloy winged chape dating from the Early Iron Age, c. 800-600 BC. The chape is missing sections from the ends of both wings and is damaged and distorted in the central section. Overall in plan the chape has two long swept-back wings which are sub-triangular section and that taper as they extend away from the hollow central section. A complete copper-alloy seal matrix of Medieval date in very good condition. The seal matrix is pointed oval in plan ('vessica'), with a raised band running down the centre on the reverse and a semi-circular lug at one end drilled with a circular perforation. An incomplete cast copper alloy steelyard (scale with beam arms of unequal length), and suspension chains / loops of Roman date (1st to 2nd Century AD). The steelyard consists of a round sectioned arm with notched calibrations which are now very faint. These may have been for the suspension of cords or trays at different points depending on what was being weighed. hole at the rounded end and two similarly sized loops offset on either side. A complete Late Iron Age gold stater of the Western Region / Dobunni, dating from c. AD 20-43. The coin is struck for the ruler Eisu, and appears to be a variant of both ABC 2075 (Cottam et al's 'Eisu Ricu') and ABC 2078 (Cottam et al's 'Eisu Tree'). The style of the horse suggests it maybe ABC 2078, which is a more common issue than ABC 2075.

A cast lead alloy token or tally of post-medieval date. The token bears the faint remains of a raised design of a grid pattern of diagonal lines on one side and the initials R D on the other (Powell Type 22). It has been suggested that such grid designs may represent ploughing lines. Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. A complete copper-alloy post-medieval French jetton issued under the reigns of Charles V to Charles VI (AD 1373 - 1415). A "Dolphin" type with an obverse inscription LE NOBLE ET FIER POI ("Noble and proud fish"). Mitchener, Volume I, page 183- 184. Similar to nos 482 to 487. The jetton has a small chip on one edge but is otherwise complete. Frank Basford notes in database record IOW- 23EA71 for a similar jetton that "According to Mitchiner (ibid: 182), 'The dolphin ('dauphin') was [the] traditional badge of the Counts of Alban, Dauphins of Viennois'.

A near-complete cast copper alloy strap fitting or belt mount in the form of a stylised acorn, dating to the Post Medieval period. The front of the mount is convex, and the reverse concave.
