Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy furniture fitting of post-medieval date. The fitting is in the form of an equal-armed cros with slightly expanded terminals. There is no decoration visible on the front of the mount. On there reverse of the mount are four sunken hollows at the end of each arm, all filled with the remains of an unidentified substance presumabely to secure the mount in place. The form of the cross and the colour of the metal strongly suggests a post-medieval, if not later date. The mount probably adorned an item of furniture of casket / chest. Suggested date: AD 1500-1800.

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete lead alloy cloth seal of post-medieval to early modern date. The cloth seal is a three-part seal wich has been folded closed when it was secured to the bale of cloth (for example). The front of the seal has the words W[...]ANDLEY LONDON around the central seal tab, which has the co-joined letters WH upon it. The loop of the seal partly obscures the word 'London'. The reverse of the seal has a plain outer edge but centrally there are the stamped, not cast, letters H [..] - the second (or potentially the first) letter is not clear.
This is a clothier's seal from London and…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete lead alloy token or tally of post-medieval date. The token has a six petalled flower on one face and initials probably reading HN (N retrograde) and possibly and X on the other. Underneath the main initials is what appears to be an small six-armed cross and possibly a V, although it is far from clear.
The use of these objects is uncertain - they could be agricultural tokens or tallies given to workers to 'spend' locally, like trade tokens or the later hop tokens. It has also been suggested that they are game pieces. Lead tokens with initials generally date from c. AD 150…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete and squashed lead alloy bird feeder of post-medieval date (c. AD 1450-1700). The feeder would have had a flat back to allow it to sit up against a cage or other item; the front of the feeder is rounded. This is evident in the plano-convex shape of the base, which remains intact and undamaged. The upper rim of the bird feeder is damaged although a double cast-line acts as minimalist decoration. A single hole near the rim of the reverse of the feeder (the flat back) would have been where the feeder could have been secured to the cage by string. Interestingly there appears …

A clipped halfpenny of a Henry VIII (AD 1509-1547), dating to the period AD 1509-1526. The initial mark looks like a pomegranate (Canterbury mint) however the lettering on the reverse appears to read [Lon]don, which would indicate a portcullis or castle initial mark. The coin is hard to read because of size and condition and it may also be a mule. Lombardic lettering. North N1779/1780.

A cast lead alloy token or tally of post-medieval date. The token bears the faint remains of a raised design of a grid pattern of diagonal lines on one side and the initials R D on the other (Powell Type 22). It has been suggested that such grid designs may represent ploughing lines. Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be Post Medieval in date (c. AD 1500 - 1850), although this …

A gold 'posy' finger ring of post-medieval date, now distorted and with a broken hoop. The finger ring has a thick D-shaped section with no external decoration but as is usual for these rings there is an internal inscription. This inscription reads ' I love and like my choyce' in a lower case script. A maker's mark consisting of capital W in a sub-rectantgular cartouche above a simlar cartouche filled with six pellets preceeds the inscription.
In its current state the finger ring has a maximum length of 32.8mm. The band is 1.7mm thick and 4.9mm wide. The ring weighs 7.2 grams.
