A silver Roman Republican denarius of the moneyer Cn Domitius Calvinus, dating to c. 39 BC (Reece period 1). Obverse: OSCA, head of Hercules right. Reverse: DOM COS ITER IMP. Emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis and apex. Mint of Osca (modern Huesca, NE Spain). Crawford 532/1. There is a small hole / punch in the centre of the reverse which does not continue through to the obverse.

A fragment of a clay pipe stem of late 17th century date. The stem has a faint maker's mark which has been identified as that of William Pearce of Marlborough, Wiltshire, who was operating c. AD 1690. The mark is partly contained in a cartouche with tapering point at the base with two pellets or stars either side of the point. The upper portion of the mark is unclear. The mark reads WIL[L] PEARC[E].
The clay pipe fragment was found in a garden on land previously used as an orchard.

An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch dating to the Middle Iron Age, c. 300-150 BC. The brooch is an Adam's Class 2Bb2, a regional type nicknamed the 'Vale brooch' with a concentration in the Oxfordshire / Berkshire area. It is estimated that approximately one-third of the brooch survives. Three domes are joined horizontally by a short neck, with the central dome having a slightly larger diameter than the two side domes (11.9mm and 11.4mm respectively). An incomplete copper alloy button of early modern date. The button bears the words 'RAILWAY POLICE' above and below the letter 'E & G'. This button is probably from the uniform of a member of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Police, which were operational in 1847 until they were absorbed by the North British Railway in 1865. Why this button should be so far from home is unknown.
The reverse of the button bears the slogan 'EXTRA SUPERFINE : BEST QUALITY'. There is no indication of the name or address of the manufacturer, which is often seen on later 19th century buttons. The fasten…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Polden HIll style brooch, dating from c. AD 80-120. The brooch retains both wings which terminate in end caps, pierced to take the spring axis bar. The pin is broken and missing. The bow is angular in form with a rectangular recess at the top of the bow which whould have contained enamelling, but this is now missing. The foot of the brooch terminates in a rounded, expanded knop and the catch plate is intact.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy saucer brooch of early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date, dating from c. AD 450-550. The fragment (the larger of the two in the image, on the right hand side) has geometric patterns in a border around a central double-armed cross. There is traces of silvering. The reverse of the fragment retains part of the broken pin lug. Interestingly, this fragment re-fits with a fragment found at Detectival 2018 (which also matched to a third piece found in 2018) and donated to the Museum. A base sherd from a Roman ceramic vessel, a Samian ware cup, dating to the period AD 145-175. The fabric is fine and hard with a glossy dark red slip on both external and internal surfaces. The base retains some of the pedestal ring. There is a maker's stamp on the base, identified by Paul Booth as die 3a of Albucius II of Lezoux, France, a major centre for Samian production in central Gaul. The form is likely to be a small cup - Dragendorff 33 (see British Museum Collection 1937,0316.2 for a complete example). Many thanks to Paul for his identification of this object.

A near complete but worn cast copper-alloy and silver Hiberno-Scandinavian-style Early Medieval strap-end, dating to the latter ninth to eleventh centuries. The strap-end is roughly tongue-shaped with a split end for the insertion of the strap, a zoomorphic terminal consisting of an open-mouthed beast with large protruding eyes, and a flat circular region between these which has incised decoration on both sides, featuring a roundel and separate panels of interlace. A cast silver gilt looped portion of a post-medieval dress fastener.
The item is sub-triangular in shape and is formed of the head and wings of a cherub. Below the head is a large open D-shaped loop, into which the hook part of the garment fastener would slide. Above the head are two smaller sub-circular attachment loops, through which thread would pass to sew the fastener into a garment. Description: An ornate base silver mount dating to the 19th century or later.
The mount is sub-rectangular in plan with very rounded narrow edges. At the base of the mount on one long edge is an expanded foot, bevelled in section having a flat back and sloping front. At the top of the mount, in the centre of the long edge, is a trefoil-shaped projection.

TREASURE CASE 2019 T846. Description: A complete and well preserved post-medieval gold 'posy' ring, dating to the period AD 1600 - 1750. The finger ring has a D-shaped band, plain externally. Inside the band is an inscription in a Roman script reading 'God hath me lent my content' followed by a maker's mark of the letters I P within a rectangular cartouche.

A complete flint thumbnail scraper of late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, c. 2400 BC - 2200 BC. The scraper has been made on a tertiary flake of a mottled dark brown flint, lighter at the edges where the flint is thinner. The scraper retains the platform and bulb of percussion. There is invasive retouching around both lateral edges and the distal surface, all of which is restricted to the dorsal side.
