Description: A small gold ingot of uncertain date, but probably later Iron Age to Early Medieval (Viking). The ingot is roughly sub-rectangular in section and in plan. There appears to be damage or a lip in the ingot on one long edge. The short edges appear to show cut-marks. Dimensions: Length: 24.6 mm, Width: 13.5 mm, Thickness: 2.1 mm. Weight: 7.82 g Discussion: Although gold ingots are traditionally difficult to date out of context they are often attributed to a Viking date, c. AD 750-1050. The Vikings had a bullion economy where the purity and weight of the metal were more impor…

Object type: PLUG
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead alloy plug or vessel mend of uncertain date. In plan the plug has a plano-convex body and on the reverse a short round-necked integrally cast shank with flattened discoidal head. This section would have plugged the hole in a vessel wall (if that is its use). If so then this was a substantial vessel (or the like). Possibly Roman but also possible medieval / post-medieval. The latter seems more likely.

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead alloy spindle whorl of uncertain date (Roman to medieval, c. AD 43-1500). The spindle whorl is sub-conical with eleven moulded ribs down its sides with a central circular aperture with a diameter of 9.8mm. The height of the whorl is uneven which may suggest an earlier date as medieval whorls are frequently biconvex. There is cracking to all surfaces of the whorl. Similar whorls have been recorded on this database: see HESH-4CF861, and HESH-98F1C0.

County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but misshapen gold finger ring or circular fitting with a plain and simple hoop. There is no decoration either internally nor externally. The inside of the band is rough compared to the outside suggesting this may be a fitting for something like a cane or knife rather than a finger ring. The internal diameter of the ring is 21.8mm (max), width 5.2mm, thickness 0.9mm, weight 3.2 grams. The ring is probably of late medieval to modern date however its undiagnostic nature makes it impossible to securely date it to pre-1709. As such it falls outside the provisions of the Treasur…

An incomplete copper alloy pin of uncertain date. The pin has a broadly plain globular or spherical head with a small conical point at the top, while the shank is quite thick and irregular, being sub-rectangular in section. The shank may have been miscast as there is a hollow down its length, although an alternative interpretation is that this is a decortive furniture fitting and the moulding of the shank facilitated the insertion and securing of the pin in to a wooden object, for eample. It is hard to confidently date this object; It is of a simple, plain form and is most likel…
