A late Anglo-Saxon openwork scabbard chape made in cast copper alloy. The chape is incomplete but is broadly rectangular in plan, missing the reverse openwork plate and also a long arm extending from the right-side of the chape. This arm would have supported and been attached to the scabbard sheath. The chape is cast in openwork; it depicts a warrior (possibly a Norman soldier), wearing a helmet with a top knop, a long tunic and carrying a kite-shaped shield and large battleaxe over his shoulder, leading a horse. The head of the horse is very now worn and detail is hard to see. The sol…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but worn copper alloy trader's farthing token of later 17th century date (AD 1643-1672). The token is very worn but does not appear to be an Oxfordshire issue. The obverse appears to depict a female's head within a shield (possibly the maid's head' logo), and the initials C over G D on the reverse. The bust of a female figure has been used as a property mark by the Mercers Company for hundreds of years. The origin of the figure is not known for certain but one newspaper account of the 1930s refers to her as 'gentle Queen Agnes': "Gentle Queen Agnes is to be seen in the orna…

An incomplete copper alloy pin of Early Iron Age date (c. 800-600 BC). The remaining section of the pin consists of the head, which has three moulded ribs, and a length of the circular sectioned shank. The remains of the pin has been coiled, possibly to make the item smaller and easier to transport or store (for example if it was going to be melted down), or possibly it has been reshaped with the intention of being used as a finger ring. An identical pin, complete and in its original state, has been recorded from Quainton in Buckinghamshire - see BUC-1D3758 on this database.

A complete copper alloy buckle plate dating to the medieval period (c. AD 1250-1400).
