Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An iron nail, possibly a hob nail of Roman date. It has a corroded dome-shaped head with integral square sectioned shaft that tapers to a blunt tip. The entire object measures 8.67mm in width/diameter at head, 4.35mm in thickness at head, 13.84mm in length including shaft, and 1.02g in weight. Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A complete iron Roman brooch of P-shaped type. At the head of the brooch is a separately cast iron axis bar, which has globular terminals and is held in place by the flattened head of the bow being folded around the axis bar. A separately iron spring chord and spring of at least four coils are coiled around the axis bar. To one side of the spring coils is a separate iron pin that is cylindrical in form, perhaps missing its tip due to old breaks, and coiled around the axis bar. This suggests the originaly pin may have broken, the surviving pin a replacement to enable the brooch to cont…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A complete iron hammer, possibly a hand hammer of Roman date. It is rectangular in form with a central oval head that has a central circular aperture retaining some of its encrusted soil. At each end the head tapers to rectangular chisel edges, one of which is pointed the other flattened and perhaps missing its outer edge due to old breaks. All surfaces of the object have red/brown corrosion products, but the object is largely complete. It measures 149.07mm in length, 45.95mm in width (at centre, 21.00mm and 21,26mm at each end), 20.70mm in thickness, and 325g in weight.

Object type: SPEAR
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A possible worn and corroded iron spear, perhaps a pilum of Roman date. It has a tapering shaft that is cylindrical in section with an incomplete socket at the attachment end. At the terminal end the shaft tapers to a flattened blade, most of which is incomplete due to old breaks. This is sub-oval in form, perhaps tapering towards a pointed tip, but the precise shape remains uncertain given the preservation of the object. It measures 288mm in surviving length, 15.91mm in width/diameter at socket, 35.04mm in surviving width at blade, and 147.46g in weight.

An iron arrowhead of probable Medieval date. It is triangular in form with slight mid ribs and narrow barbs that taper close to the integral socket. The socket itself is circular in section, flaring towards the attachment end. This arrowhead measures 68.86mm in length, 16.47mm in width, 9.58mm in thickness/diameter at socket (3.54mm in thickness at blade), and 10.62g in weight.
Close parallels to this arrowhead are noted in examples published from London (LMMC: p. 69, Types 14-15; LON-F9DC8D, LON-ECF872, see also GLO-BF0875, SF-8C4B17). These barbed and tanged arrowheads are dated …

An iron horseshoe of Post-Medieval date. It is U-shaped in form with one branch tapering to a narrow square heel-end, the opposite branch to a broader heel that is cut at an angle. Neither heel end has a calkin. On one face there is a groove, or fuller, running around the outer edge into which are sunk rectangular nail holes. Three are visible on one side, while at least two are visible on the other but the precise number is uncertain due to post-depositional corrosion. The entire object measures 115.70mm in length, 104.01mm in width, 8.63mm in thickness, and 202.97g in weight.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A worn and corroded iron annular buckle frame of probable Medieval or later date. It has an annular frame that is circular in section. Hinging around the frame is a separately cast iron pin that is rectangular in form, oval in section, and has a rounded tip that is currently stuck to the underside of the frame due to post-depositional iron corrosion. The entire object measures 16.07mm in diameter, 3.10mm in thickness, and 1.54g in weight. This buckle frame is of probable Medieval date, c.14th-15th centuries AD, if not slightly later (as Egan and Pritchard, 1991: nos. 55, 72, 88).

A large iron object, probably an anvil of possible Roman date. It is roughly rectangular in profile, square in section, tapering slightly towards one end. All surfaces have extensive corrosion and encrustation making close identification of both form and means of manufacture impossible. The entire object measures 230mm in length and 220mm in width at one end (base?), 190mm in length and 160mm in width at the opposite end (top?), and roughly 240mm in height. A very worn and heavily restored late early-medieval barrel-shaped weight. It is biconical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces. The weight has the remains of an iron core surrounded by a largely incomplete and heavily repaired/restored copper-alloy casing. On the flattened top and bottom surfaces the casing has stamped decoration. This comprises at least two rectilinear motifs formed from parallel transverse grooves from which at either and and at the centre extend short vertical and curvilinear strokes. This has a corroded rectangular aperture through which the key would have originally passed to enable the locking mechanism to work. At the top of the casing is a narrow transverse rectangular rib from which extends the locking arm, which is U-shaped in form. Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded spherical iron object, possibly iron shot or a small cannon ball. Its surfaces are corroded with some flaking. It measures 49.94mm in maximum surviving diameter and 408g (approximately 14 ounces) in weight. This is possibly a small iron shot or cannon ball, perhaps from a long barreled piece of artillery such as a Falconet or similar (see, for example, SWYOR-762D10, WMID-E6FA72, SWYOR-95EAE3, SUSS-90E2B6 etc.). It is slightly under weight for shot for cannon of this type, but this may be accounted for due to its worn surfaces.

A worn and corroded spherical iron object, possibly iron shot or a small cannon ball. Its surfaces are heavily corroded with extensive flaking. This is possibly a small iron shot or cannon ball, perhaps from a long barreled piece of artillery such as a Serpentine or Rabinet (see, for example, DENO-F42841, WAW-BF6AB1, SWYOR-4C03A3, IOW-0AFC81, WAW-45EDE1, SOM-A0A8A2 etc.). it's incomplete diameter and low weight may be a result of the extensive corrosion evident on all surfaces.

Most of both blades and barbs are incomplete due to old breaks but the sharp, pointed tip remains. It measures 36.59mm in length, 11.60mm in diameter at socket, 9.96mm in width at blade, and 3.75g in weight.
