County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Post Medieval double loop oval buckle with moulded decoration, probably dating to between AD 1550-1650. The composition of the buckle frame is uncertain, either a very high tin copper-alloy or perhaps pewter; there seem to be small traces of green corrosion on the surface, suggesting a very high tin copper alloy. The pin is composed of iron. The buckle frame is decorated along the top and bottom edges with radiating incised lines which create a braided appearance and both outer edges are decorated at the centre with a raised moulded roundel. The frame curves upwards slig…

A complete cast copper-alloy and gilded Post Medieval trapezoidal double-loop buckle with moulded decoration, probably dating to the late 17th century AD. The buckle frame seems to have been purposefully curved upwards to fit on another element. Unusually, the outer edges of the frame are thicker then the upper and lower edges and bevelled sharply, creating a thinner outer edge than inner for the loops. At either end of the narrowed strap bar is a lobed knop or possibly a moulded acorn decoration, similar in style to that of Whitehead (2001) no. 162. However, that example is a single…

A copper-alloy thimble with spiralled indentation pattern and very thin rim, probably Medieval to Post Medieval in date, c. 14th-16th centuries AD. The walls of the thimble are approximately 1 mm thick and it is likely that the thimble was made from a copper-alloy sheet and turned on a lathe. There is no central 'tonsure' at the top of the thimble, but the spiralling design runs from the centre in a counter-clockwise rotation. The indentations seem to be hand stamped and the 'rim' at the base of the thimble is a simply inscribed ring just above the circular edge of the thimble. A …
