A Post-Medieval gold posy ring. The ring is circular in plan and D-shaped in section. The rounded exterior face is plain, and the interior is iscribed in lower case script Feare god and loue mee. The stem of the F is filled in with diagonal engraved lines. A maker's mark CW appears in a rectangular punch before the inscription. Discussion: This inscription is a well-known posy, appearing in multiple forms in Joan Evans' English Posies and Posy Rings (1931:35). It is also found on several posy rings that have been reported under the Treasure Act and recorded with the Portable Anti…

A complete but distorted gold finger ring set with a carnelian in an oval bezel. The hoop is 1.2mm wide and ovoid in section, widening to flat triangular terminals where it is joined to the bezel. This join is strengthened by a strip of gold wrapped round the ends of the hoops. The back of the bezel is an applied flat plate, with a central circular pierced hole. The raised oval setting is formed from another sheet of gold folded and pinched at the top of the oval. Around it at the base is a border of twisted gold wire, with filigree beaded wire above this. The carnelian is oval with a …

A gold memorial ring. The inner inscription, preceded by a hand symbol, reads 'absens is grif' (absence is grief) with five-pointed star between the words and followed by a floral sprig. The symbols on the outer surface appear to be S type capitals, one either side of what could be interpreted as two joined XXs with a horizontal line in their centre (or a 'VA' monogram) repeated on the other side of the ring, plus 2 x intertwined capital C's backing onto each other, one set of these either side of the ring between the S and XX scheme. The outer engravings may be the intertwined lovers…

A Roman silver small keeled finger-ring with narrow D-shaped hoop. The simply-engraved triangular shoulders have damaged notched edges and frame a flat circular bezel, which is neatly engraved with the letters ToT. Rings with this inscription on their bezel are distinctive to Roman Britain and have been found in some numbers in Lincolnshire. The inscription is regarded as an abbreviation of the name of the Celtic god Toutatis (or Totatis), who was often identified with the Roman god Mars. The ring is Henig's Type VIII. A near-identical ring was found in archaeological excavations i…

A folded fragment from a gold strip dating to the Bronze Age c.1500-800 BCE. A flat gold sheet that has been folded flat against itself over 180 degrees. One original terminal survives which ends in a curved convex edge. The opposite terminal of the fragment ends in a clean transverse break. The outer surface of the sheet has incised decoration consisting of 10 parallel lines that run the length of the object taking up its entire width. This creates a ridged design. The reverse is plain although traces of the upper design’s creation are faintly visible. The objec…

A silver quatrefoil dress hook. The front plate is divided into four quadrants by a central cross, the arms of which are 45 degrees from vertical. At the centre of the cross protrudes a small hollow annulet. Each quadrant contains a slightly larger annulet. The border of the plate broadly follows their circumferences, and then pinches in towards the centre at the apex of each arm of the cross. The overall effect, when viewed from above, is of a stylised four-petal flower. The front place is covered in gilding, which has worn away in a few places. A separate, circular-sectioned si…

A complete gold-plated Late Bronze Age penannular ring with a copper alloy core, dating to the period 1150-750 BC. The gold penannular ring is decorated with thin stripes of a contrasting silvery-coloured metal. A small patch of (copper alloy) corrosion inside the terminal of the ring suggests that this ring is gold-plated rather than solid gold. Dimensions: Width: 18.5mm; Height: 17mm; Thickness: 7mm; Diameter of central perforation: 5mm; Length of gap between terminals: 2mm; Weight: 11.69g Discussion: The penannular ring belongs to a class of artefact which has been termed 'hai…

A circular gold ring, almost flat in cross-section. The exterior is decorated by two bands of beading, one along either edge. The beaded dots or pellets are mostly square in shape but irregular, and do not appear machine made; they seem to result from the use of a rectangular punch which made two pellets at a time. The beaded lines are separated from the centre of the hoop by a narrow ridge, and the centre is undecorated and slightly sunken. There is no decoration on the inner surface. Dimensions: Diameter: 17mm. Height: 5.5mm. Thickness: 0.5mm. Weight: 2…

A gold band with a narrow tang/fastening hook at one end and blunt rounded terminal at one end (with a roughly pierced hole to receive the fastening hook). Both sides of the ornament are folded over to create an overall [ shape (similar to other objects of this date and style, cf. the Binstead 'rings', discussed below). The object has been distorted and crumpled. It is not clear whether the damage occurred before or after deposition, but the latter is probable given the lack of clear or intentional breakage. Dimensions: In its current state the object has dimensions of 30mm …

A silver-gilt composite dress hook belonging to Read's (2008: 75-81) Early Post-Medieval class D type 6. It consists of a backplate, sub-traingular in plan, approximately 1mm thick, with saw-toothed edges. From each of the three corners of the backplate project three hemispherical domes. Along the centre of each side of the backplate, in the space between the domes, the edge forms the point of a triangle, so that when viewed in plan the overall effect is of another triangle sitting below, and orientated in the opposite direction to, the backplate itself. A silver signet finger-ring. The hoop expands to form a heart-shaped bezel. The face of the bezel is lightly etched with the initials "WRC" in faux-Gothic characters running from the upper-left to the lower right; the letters are made from minute hatches.
