Roman (mid 1st to 2nd century) brooch: The lower portion of the bow remains. The bow is broken at the upper edge which is at the approximate midpoint of the bow. The break is not a recent. The bow tapers to a blunt foot. On the reverse of this portion of the bow there is a complete catchplate with a triangular perforation. The surface of the brooch has a well-developed mid grey-green coloured patina. The brooch measures 32.06mm in length, 3.44mm in width across the upper edge and weighs 3.19g. An incomplete Roman copper-alloy composite double-disc brooch (c. AD100-c. 200). Due to breaks and abrasion at the edges, the disc is now sub-circular in plan with traces of 4 flat knops equi-distant around the edge. In the centre there is a rivet hole which on the reverse holds in place a bar with a catchplate at one terminal and two semi-circular perforated lugs at the other. Roman copper-alloy 'vulvate' or 'coffee bean' mount dating to circa AD 150 - 300. The mount comprises a damaged plate with worn edges, presumably this would have been a hexagonal plate as seen on parallels noted below. Protruding from the centre is a raised oval boss decorated with a linear groove. At the reverse of the mount are two circular-section lugs both of which are incomplete and the body of the mount is hollow. The mount has an abraded light green matte surface.
