Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An assemblage of iron object discovered by metal detecting in proximity to the discovery of Anglo Saxon Shield Bosses c. 6th century AD. The items consist largely of wrought iron, square section nails and possibly the remnants of clench bolts. The other items may represent hooks and possibly a 'Strike-a-Light' with the 'C' shaped end. That item is 95.4mm long with an average thickness of 1.54mm. The riveted item may be the remnant of a shield handle. The presence of these items may be indicative of coffin burials.
The whole assemblage is heavily corroded and many are in a fragile c…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A pair of early medieval copper alloy undecorated disc brooches c. 450 - 550 AD. The first brooch is largely intact, bar the iron pin that has left a ferrous stain in evidence of its presence. The pin lug and the rolled over catch remain. The rim is fritted around the whole circumference. The surface of this brooch has a mottled green/brown patina with very small curvy linear markings in the verdigris, possibly from an organic material once covering the brooch. The diameter = 39.0mm, thickness = 1.8mm.
The second example if in a poor condition, it has been damaged in antiquity leav…

Object type: SPEAR
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An Early Medieval, Anglo-Saxon iron spearhead c. 550 - 650 AD. It has an elongated leaf form blade with a gradual taper into the socket which is split with an open joint down its length. The blade appearing to be lentoid in cross section, typical of Swanton's type C1 and has had the tip bent over and flattened onto the blade. There is a slight bend at the midpoint of the leaf blade and corrosion has been significant on that section, removing the outer form of the blade on each side of the centre line.
The spear is heavily corroded and in poor condition.

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of an Anglo-Saxon iron shield boss with a pronounced apex with a large flat circular platform with a small central protrusion that may have held a decorative disc c. 500 - 600 AD. With only around 25% of the boss remaining, it is difficult to be precise as to group but the flatter profile of the cone with its pronounced platform apex is indicative of group 2. The wall section looks thin but measurement is difficult with the corrosion leading to inaccurate assessment.
The remnant is heavily corroded and in a fragile condition.

An early, incomplete Anglo-Saxon iron shield boss, typical of group 1, in this instance, the cone is slightly concave, in line with group 1.2 c. 450 - 600 AD. This example is missing the flange, the wall (1.8cm) is convex leading up to a moderate overhanging carination. The apex is subtly convex with a flat plateau. The boss is substantially encrusted with metal erosion and compacted soil. There is a noticeable overlap seam just beneath the apex form, indicative of the apex being changed/repaired or simply fitted as a separate piece during construction.
This boss is very heavily co…

An early Anglo-Saxon iron shield boss, typical of the type classified as group 1.1 c. 450-600 AD. This example has a well-defined flange (1.2cm) of which around 50% remains with evidence of a single iron rivet in situ. The wall (1.8cm) is deeply convex with a pronounced overhanging carination. The cone is straight with a spiked apex. There is a fine circumferential ridge approximately half way up the cone that is suggestive of a two-piece construction, the ridge is unseen on the inside of the cone due to the level of encrusted erosion. However, unlike the suggested methodology in EARL…

The cutting edge has a pronounced crescentic form with the tips re-curving back onto the expanding form of the blade body. The body has a well-defined stop ridge just short of midway down its length and the flanges extend and taper, down to the blade section. There are clear casting lines down each side of the axe, there are no other design elements to be seen.
The blade appears to have been lightly used with a few small indentations and mo…

A copper alloy cast letter punch (leather?) possibly dating from the 16th to the 18th century AD. The punch has a capital 'V', early evidence of this type of font first appears in the font used for the text of the 'Hypnerotomachia Poliphili' published in 1499 but it was used thereafter for at least 400 years and can still be seen today. However, the style and surface patina of the piece suggest perhaps the 18th century. The tang and stop are intact as is the stamp with the letter 'V'. It is possible that the craftsman had a hefty handle that he could use for any of his letters by simp…

There is a cast circumferential ridge/line at the point beneath the expanded knob terminal and further decoration just above the rim, in the form of four concentric grooves. It is possible that the item was cast hollow and then filled with perhaps lead, to add momentum to the action of the spear.
