Object type: WORKBOX
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probable copper alloy lid from an Anglo-Saxon workbox. The lid is circular thin sheet of copper alloy with a central hole, containing a suspension loop. The loop consists of a single oval strip of copper alloy looped over at the top, threaded through the hole and then splayed on the reverse to secure it to the lid. Attached to the suspension loop is another small strip of copper alloy looped through the suspension loop, perhaps forming the first link in a chain. There is a further hole to either side of the central hole although it is not certain whether these are areas of damage. …

Lead ventilating panel from a window. The panel is square, slightly damaged at one corner and decorated with openwork tracery patterns. Fragment of painted window glass. The glass is honey coloured with a golden mottled patina. The surface is decorated with a painted motif of perhaps a stylised leaf or sprig of foliage in a red-brown outline. The expense of such window glass at this time must indicate that it came from a high status building.

An openwork lead panel, possibly a grille or ventilator for a window. The panel takes the form of a circular frame with a trefoil openwork cell to the bottom right and left corners. The circle is divided by five vertical columns and a quatrefoil openwork cell in the centre. A further, possible quatrefoil cell, is located to the left and the right of this. The upper quarter is missing. The finder no longer has this item, but thinks that it was two or three inches in width. This might suggest that it is too large to be a pilgrim item, and therefore more likely to be a grille. In 'The…

Treasure case 2017 T191: an incomplete silver post-medieval whistle dating to the period c. AD 1500 - 1650. Only approximately one quarter of the tubular body survives. The surviving part is divided into two sections by a collar of coiled silver wire (known as 'cannetille'). To one side of this collar the tubular body is undecorated. The terminal flares in diameter, and this suggests that it is from the far-end of the whistle rather than the mouth-piece, the latter which tends to taper. The tubular frame to the other side of the collar is decorated with an ornate circle containing S-s…
