A Roman enamelled copper alloy fob or dangler, possibly part of a harness fitting. The object has a flat circular body with an integral collared loop in the middle. Surrounding the loop is a background of blue enamel, set into which is a band of comma-shaped swirls of reserve metal. There are twelve swirls in total. The flat underside is undecorated.  The style of enamel decoration suggests a second century date, though the exact function is uncertain. It is similar in style to fobs, danglers, and harness fittings of Roman date (for example NCL-9147B0 and discussion), though some…

An assemblage of Roman pottery collected unsystematically during metal detecting. The assemblage comprises 98 sherds weighing a total of 1473g. As would be expected for a rural settlement, the assemblage is dominated by greyware vessels (80 sherds) of mid to late Roman date. Samian and Colour Coated Wares are present in smaller numbers, as is a single sherd of a locally produced mortarium. The colour-coated wares are Nene-Valley types; while some might be Nene Valley proper, others could well be be Lincoln products as splitting these fabrics is challenging. The colour-coated ware…

A base from a post-medieval Cistertian ware vessel (c. 1500-1650). The base is flat, circular, and has a dark grey, reduced fabric with frequent calcareous inclusions. A thick, dark brown/black glaze is visible on the basal edge and also on the interior. Sitting on top of the glaze on the interior is a large, irregular layer of what appears to be molten lead. WIthin this is an oval pellet of lead. The break of the vessel wall is smooth and appears burnt in places. It is possible that this vessel was used to melt lead.

A series of stab marks done with a pointed stick are visible on the upper surface of the handle. The wall of the vessel is reduced whereas the handle is oxidised. The vessel has a mottled green-brown glaze which has a rust-red margin. The sherd has abraded breaks. Humberware was produced at several sites in East Yorkshire, York, and probably also in North Lincolnshire.

A cast copper alloy sword pommel of Late Early-Medieval or Medieval date, likely 11th or 12th century. The pommel is oval in plan and plano-convex in profile. The apex is missing, as is the upper part of one of the large side faces. This face bears an openwork design comprising at least two sub-oval apertures. The damage suffered by the apex makes it difficult to determine the original openwork design; however, it is possible that it picks out a crouching beast or similar motif. Feint incised or moulded lines also appear to suggest a beast though the surface is very worn. Th…

A possible fragment of headplate from an Early Medieval radiate headed brooch. The headplate appears to have been semi-circular and flat. The perimeter is castellated. The headplate is recessed and decorated with a perimeter line of reserve metal. Two sub-triangular panels of reserve metal also survive. A lug for a spring survives on the reverse, apparently being one of a pair that held an iron spring. Iron corrosion is visible on the reverse.

The body is flat, trapezoidal, and has a projecting central head, somewhat mouse- or bat-like in appearance. To the left and the right of the head is a sub-oval aperture though these are now corroded closed. Above, to the left and the right, are two further projecting heads, though these are somewhat smaller in size…
