An incomplete medieval iron barrel padlock. The fragment includes the circular 'cap' end and part of the internal mechanism. The cylindrical outer casing and locking arm are now missing. The remaining internal spring mechanism comprises three rectangular slots or arms; two are set parallel to one another, while the third appears to be set at a right angle to the other two. The three arms extend beyond the circular cap and curve to form a loop of three arms. Examples illustrated in Egan (1998:92-93) dates these to the 13th to 15th centuries AD. An Early Anglo-Saxon iron spear, dating circa 550-650. The spear has a flat tapering blade with an incomplete conical shaft. The shaft is not fully rounded. The blade is of maximum width close to the socket. The spear measures 298mm in length. The blade measures 242mm in length and 38mm in width at the widest point. The socket measures 12mm in diameter at the break. An attempt was made to classify and date this weapon using the system defined in Bayliss and Hines (2013, 163-170) which uses ratios between spearhead's various elements. These allowed the spearhead the spearhead to …

An iron clapper from a bell. The shank is hexagonal in section and terminates with a swollen terminal also of hexagonal section. The suspension loop at the top is formed by a simple loop with the terminal partially coiled back around the shank. The clapper measures 140mm in length. The width of the shank is circa 11mm. The 'ball' measures circa 21mm in diameter. This clapper, which is likely to have come from a large hand-bell, was found in association with several other bell fragments of probable middle Saxon date, for example LIN-E97BD1, LIN-E86CFC, LIN-D8FC8C, and LIN-4B37F8.

An incomplete early Anglo-Saxon iron shield boss. The boss has a relatively low, conical body. The finial of the apex is missing, but the rod of circular section on which it was held survives in part. The surviving height measures 8mm and the diameter measures 8mm (including corrosion). The cone is conical and has slightly convex sides in profile. The cone has an overhanging carination leading to a rather shallowly concave wall below. The flange is mostly damaged, but may have measured circa 21mm in width. A circular outline on one of the surviving portions of the flange suggest that …

An incomplete early Anglo-Saxon iron shield boss. The finial of the apex is missing, but part of the rod of circular section on which it was held survives. This measures circa 17mm in height, and circa 8mm in diameter (including corrosion). The cone is conical and has straight sides in profile. Only a small section of the perimeter of the cone survives, measuring 61mm from apex to perimeter; none of the wall or flange survive, which makes classification difficult. The overall profile does, however, suggest that is a relatively low boss, probably of Hines and Bayliss's Group SB1-a, whic…

An incomplete early Anglo-Saxon iron shield boss. The boss has a low, conical body. The apex is circular in plan and tapers to a rod of circular section. It is in an intermediate form between a curved triangular and T-shaped profile (as per Hines and Bayliss Form b (Hines and Bayliss 2013: 149, fig. 5.36). The cone is conical and has straight sides in profile. The cone has an overhanging carination leading to a concave wall below. The flange is mostly damaged. Two discoid rivet heads are visible around the surviving portions of the perimeter. It is estimated that the boss originally h…
