Iron knife blade and tang. The blade is flat backed and tapers to the blade edge. There is what appears to be a drilled hole through the body of the blade serving an unknown purpose. The blade itself is offset from the tang, being placed to the right (see photo LIN444B). The tip of the blade is missing. This object may date to the Early Medieval period.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Possible foot from a sceptre or rod. The object is cylindrical in shape, with an iron core coated in copper alloy. The iron core is likely to have been some kind of rod, and the copper alloy a decorative terminal. The terminal is very worn, rounded and has three transverse ribs decorating the shaft. The object is very similar in size, shape and decoration to the iron and bronze rod terminal found in a male burial discovered during pipe laying along Ermine Street at Brough on Humber in 1936. Two sceptre heads were also found within this burial.

Iron knife blade and tang. The whittle tang is about 25mm in length. The knife blade has an angled back about 4mm wide; both the front and rear parts of the back are straight. The tip of the blade is missing. The cutting edge is about 52mm in length. This knife is of Evison's type 5 (Evison 1987, 113) or Ottaway's type A2 (Ottaway 1992, 562-4). It may date from any time from about 575 AD up to the Norman Conquest, or even possibly beyond.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Iron harpoon. The harpoon has a socketed shaft with the remains of two iron rivets in situ. The socketed shaft is formed by rolling the flat wings over. The length of the socket is 91mm. The shaft is relatively thick, rectangular in section 13mm by 10mm, and 440mm in length. The shaft only tapers at the point where it meets the barb. There is one barb to the harpoon, which is square in section and 48mm in length. The tip has been broken. The thickness of the shaft and the barb suggest that this artefact is a harpoon, such as a whalers harpoon, rather than being a similar style w…

Iron clench bolts or clench nails, consisting of a rectangular-sectioned shank and a square head at either end. About 45 have been found to date from the same area, but it is difficult to assign a date to them. They vary in length, but are in the main between 45mm and 70mm. Clench bolts were often used in the construction of ships and doors. Probably post-medieval or modern in date.

Incomplete probable harness ring. The object consists of an solid oval-sectioned iron ring with bronze casing, which has split as the iron has expanded due to corrosion. This splitting is visible along the internal and external line of the ring, which obscures the details regarding whether the copper alloy casing was U-shaped and hammered round, or a complete cylinder. The external surface of the bronze casing is decorated with transverse ribbing. The object is similar to a simple terret ring found with two other probable harness rings and two terret rings in a context dating to circa…

Probable iron furniture mount. The fitting has an undecorated solid plano-convex head with an integral circular sectioned shank below. This shank is circa 7mm in diameter. The shank is collared by an integral plano-convex head, circa 14mm in diameter, through which the shank appears to extend. This suggests that the object is more likely to be a furniture mount rather than a strap mount.
