An incomplete medieval iron barrel padlock. The fragment includes the circular 'cap' end and part of the internal mechanism. The cylindrical outer casing and locking arm are now missing. The remaining internal spring mechanism comprises three rectangular slots or arms; two are set parallel to one another, while the third appears to be set at a right angle to the other two. The three arms extend beyond the circular cap and curve to form a loop of three arms. Examples illustrated in Egan (1998:92-93) dates these to the 13th to 15th centuries AD. For a similar example see PAS referenc…

The other end has an expanded section, triangular when viewed from above and trapezoidal when viewed from the side. This part is also made of iron and is very worn. It looks as is if it was originally two sections and perhaps grasped the iron blade. Decorating the handle are five evenly spaced copper alloy circular bands. Between the bands there was probably once wood or bone however no evidence of this survives.

Probable iron furniture mount. The fitting has an undecorated solid plano-convex head with an integral circular sectioned shank below. This shank is circa 7mm in diameter. The shank is collared by an integral plano-convex head, circa 14mm in diameter, through which the shank appears to extend. This suggests that the object is more likely to be a furniture mount rather than a strap mount.
