Object type: BOX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silvered copper-alloy object, perhaps a mount from a box. The mount is long and thin and terminates with an open-mouthed animal with an upturned snout, probably representing a dragon. The head is rectangular in section and the only facial feature represented is the dragon's ears, depicted by two small moulded humps. The beast's neck appears to be undecorated, but the body is covered with moulded diagonal grooves, probably representing scales. The tail is D-shaped in section and is covered with a line of transverse grooves. The tip of the tail is slightly flattened. There are th…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pointed oval lead alloy seal matrix. The matrix has been badly damaged on both sides near to the tip. The breaks have a series of regular small steps which resemble the type of marks seen when an object has been hacked at with a knife. This might have been carried out purpously as a way of voiding the seal matrix when it wasn't needed anymore. The reverse of the seal has a central ridge terminating at the rounded end with an integral broken stud. In the centre of the face there is an uncertain motif, perhaps resembling a plant or scroll. The surrounding legend is very difficult t…
