The front of the seal is decorated with a motif depicting the lamb of God. The lamb is shown in profile to the left. Above the Lamb is perhaps an angel, and below is a robed figure with arms raised. It is possible that incised lines extend diagonally upwards from the hands towards the angel; if this is the case then it could be representing St Francis and the stigmata. A pointed oval border of pellets surrounds the motif and separates it from the legend. The…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A Roman copper-alloy mount. The mount is a circular convex disc with a raised rim and inner circle. It has a circular hole in the centre. The mount is similar to one found in Crummy 1983, no.4037, given an early Roman date in the 1st century. Crummy states this may be military in origin, though it is difficult to determine. It is also similar to another, with a central hole, which is suggested to be a jangle from a harness (Crummy 1983, no. 4618). The present item seems more robust that the examples illustrated by Crummy. It may, therefore, be a box mount rather than a harness item.
