An incomplete hammered silver coin of the medieval period; a penny of Edward I (AD 1272-1307), probably Class 4b, minted at Durham and dating from about AD 1283-1286. The coin has a diameter of 19.4mm, a thickness of 0.65mm, and weighs 1.08g. The obverse has a crowned bust facing forward and the inscription EDW R ANG[L DNS HYB]. The reverse has a long cross with three pellets in each of its four angles; the inscription is [+C]IV-ITAS DVR[EME]. Compare North (1991) Volume 2, number 1024 on page 29.

The edges of the coin may have been clipped and are worn, making the legends illegible. The coin is pierced at 3o'clock on the obverse, from the reverse side. There is no visible initial mark, but North suggests it should be a short cross fitchee or a trefoil. The coin may have been struck from local dies. The coin is clipped with half of the legend missing. It is 15.2mm diameter, 0.8mm thick and 0.79g. See number 1658 on page 95 of North Volume II (1991).
