A fragment of probably modern partially melted glass, probably dating from AD 1850 - 2000. It is translucent and colourless, with no internal structure visible. The two main faces and all the unbroken edges are sinuous, suggesting this is glass that has been melted and solidified, rather than a naturally occurring quartz crystal. Two edges are breaks displaying conchoidal fractures. It is 25mm long, 23mm wide and 7.7mm thick. 6.3g.  Modern glass would not normally be recorded, but it was found on a site of prehistoric activity where a knapped rock crystal lithic implement ha…

A piece of glass probably from a vessel handle of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is a very dark blue semi-translucent curved solid piece of glass with one end being an irregular break and the opposite end showing signs of a possible fixing to the body of a vessel. The surface is very smooth and shows no wear, only very few scratches and no oxidisation. The attachment end is circular and is 21.7mm diameter. The face is slightly concave. It then tapers and bends away into a D-shaped cross-section, 11.3mm wide and 7.6mm thick at the break. Length is 43.1mm and weight 11.88g. Tho…

A blue glass bead of unknown date, Bronze Age to Modern, 2200 BC - AD 1950. The bead is made from opaque dark blue glass with spiral trails visible in the structure. It is sub-annular, tending towards square with a D shaped cross section on each side of the circular central hole. One end is conical, and the other is more rounded. Spiral lines in the structure are the result of the winding process during manufacture. The bead is not decorated, but appears to be complete. The bead is 4.2mm wide, 4.1mm thick and 3.5mm long from end to end. The central hole is 1mm diameter. 0.09g. Blue…

A fragment of glass probably from a bowl or similar vessel of probable Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The fragment is a a rim sherd formed from very dark blue translucent glass with no visible striations or bubbles. A fragment of glass, probably of Roman date, about AD 43 - 410. The piece is a short rod, sub-circular in section and curled over at one end forming a rounded coil. The other end is incomplete and rough. It is not clear whether this is an intentional shape, or one resulting from glass working or post depositional melting. The glass is translucent with a slight green/blue tinge. There are lots of bubbles internally, and some darker streaks. It is 29.4mm long, 14.8mm wide and 15.5mm thick. 5.9g.

A collection of 12 glass beads of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The beads are varied in shape and colour. They range from dark blue through royal blue, to light blue (both translucent and opaque) and turquoise, green, yellow as well as mottled cream and blue. They are mainly annular or globular beads, some more rounded and some more cylindrical. They all have circular central holes of varying diameter from 1-3mm. Birgitta Hoffmann (Pers. Comm.) draws attention to the bead at the top left appearing to be cased colourless over blue glass and the one at the bottom right apparently…

A glass bead of uncertain date, probably Post Medieval to Modern. It is made of very dark blue, almost black glass, which appears slightly purple when light is shone through the thinner parts. It is circular in cross-section and oval in profile with a slightly elongated lip at one end. A circular hole of 2.6mm diameter runs through the centre along the long axis. The surface is very glossy, and no internal structure to indicate how the bead was manufactured can be seen becaues the glass is so opaque. It is 17mm long, 10.4mm diameter and 2.26g. A black button made from glass, of probable Post medieval date, about AD 1500 - 1700. It is plano-convex in shape, more convex on the front than the reverse, and there is a chip missing from one side. The spiral marks on the back and, less obviously, on the front show that it was made by winding molten glass into a blob. In the centre of the back are two holes which would have held a metal attachment loop. The button measures 14.3mm diameter, 9.1mm thick and is 2.48g. The glass is pitted and opaque. A blue glass bead of unknown date. The annular bead is made from semi-translucent light blue glass with small bubbles visible in the structure and tiny chips over all of the outer face. The fragment is only 15mm long from the top of the rim to the break, but the base of the neck is starting to flare outwards before the break. A blue glass bead of unknown date. The bead is made from translucent royal blue glass with small bubbles visible in the structure and a small area of lighter blue glass. One end of the bead is flatter than the other, and the more rounded end is higher on one side than the other. The asymmetrical form comes from the winding process during manufacture (Hoffmann, pers. comm. 28/7/15).
