Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy sexfoil mount of probable Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1500. It is essentially flat, with a slightly rounded front face and slightly uneven reverse. The front is decorated with six incised straight lines to emphasis the divisions between the lobes. One lobe is pierced for a separate iron rivet, of which only corrosion survives. Its position in the centre of one of the lobes is unusual. The mount is 31.1mm long, 28.5mm wide and 2.8mm thick. 8.21g. The metal has a smooth grey green patina. Compare CAM-F7C537 which is a mount of similar shape, with a matching off-cent…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead conical probable weight of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval, about AD 43 - 1800. It is also possible that this object is a gaming piece. The artefact is a slanting cone with an uneven surface. There is a conical hole in the base which extends abouy 5mm into the centre of ther weight. The object has a smooth white patina. It is 14.9mm tall, 18.2mm diameter and 20.02g. Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional artefact, and forms and styles do not alter significantly over time. Weights such as this have been used from Roman through to post-medieval times and nu…

A lead alloy musket ball of post-Medieval date, circa 1600 - 1800. The ball has been flattened into a oval spheroid, probably by impact into a soft material such as wet clay. The ball has a yellowish-grey patina. It is 19.1mm long, 15.9mm wide and 11.8mm thick. 19.49g. The weight suggests that this would have been used in a carbine . A lead spindle whorl of Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 900 - 1500. It is of Walton Rogers Form B2 with two flat faces of equal size and curved sides. An incomplete copper alloy figurine of Christ, dating from the Post-Medieval period, about AD 1500 - 1900. The figure is three dimensional, but the back is hollowed with a deep depression at the back of the waist and the remains of two integral attachment spikes, one behind the shoulders, and one behind the feet. These suggest that the fiigurine was part of a crucifix. Christ's head is tilted upwards and to the side, his feet are on top of one another, and he wears a loincloth. A lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval date, about AD 1100 - 1600. It is circular in plan and biconvex in cross-section, with a straight median band. This does not fit neatly into Walton Rogers nor Gleba's typologies based on shape, but probably suggests a Medieval date (though it could be considered to be a "lenticular discoidal" whorl of possible Roman date). The central aperture is circular and has a diameter of 9.1mm. The whorl is 28mm diameter, 9.9mm thick and 42.1g.

A silver ingot of Early Medieval date, about AD 850 - 1000. It is a bar of rounded triangular section with rounded and tapered ends. There are four testing nicks along one of the angles. Nicking the side of the ingot was an intervention sometimes undertaken in antiquity to test purity. The ingot is 45.2mm long, 8.8mm wide and 7.1mm thick. 15.4g. The metal has a smooth dark grey patina. The shape, general appearance and testing nicks are all consistent with a Viking-period origin, suggesting a likely date in the late 9th/10th century. Similar parallels can be found, for instance, in th…
