"DUNNINGTON", York Curatorial Report by Eleanor Ghey 7 silver denarii to AD 2017 T919 PAS ID: SWYOR-4A3012 Circumstances of discovery: Found by seven finders [names redacted] on a Yorkshire Searchers Club outing on 10th August 2017. The coins were found on cultivated land and were scattered along about 30 meters of a hedgerow. A silver Post Medieval seal matrix probably dating from AD 1600 - 1700. The face of the matrix is an elongated octagonal shape. The reverse is a shallow cone, extending into the handle, only a stub of which survives. There is a double collar in relief at the base of the handle and then a broken trefoil, quatrefoil or more complex handle. The design on the face is of a standard rose plant, with a central stem, dividing into three at the top, each stem carrying a flower in full bloom, and some buds or leaves. An Early Medieval, Viking-period silver ingot dating from AD 850 - 1000. It is sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross-section. The complete end is rounded. The opposite end is cut with a single blade on a slight angle. The surface is dimpled and scratched. The ingot is 43.5mm long, 10.8mm wide and 8mm thick. 23.5g. Compare CAM-F04AC8 (2014 T636) which notes that: "Viking silver ingots were probably used as bullion in trade and commercial transactions before the introduction of coinage and possibly also sometimes as stock pieces of precious metal for casting into jewellery. An incomplete silver disc or element from a cufflink dating from AD 1702 - 1714. The disc is circular in plan, with a bevelled edge, partially missing. The front has been die stamped with a left facing bust of Queen Anne, with a capital letter A to the left and a capital letter R to the right. The angled edge of the disc is decorated with repeating triangular foliage motifs. The back is plain and undecorated. A sub circular loop is present on the rear, but is flattened. A Post Medieval silver gilt finger ring with internal inscription, dating from about AD 1550 - 1650. The band is D-shaped in cross-section and the outer face is decorated with oval lobes, some separated by transverse lines in relief. Some lobes are narrower, and some lines are thicker, until they become indistinguishable from each other. There is a butt joint which is now a crack across the hoop.
