Copper alloy radiate (with some surviving silvering) of Carausius (AD 286-93) (Reece Period 14), FIDES EXERCIT, Four standards. C Mint, - // SPC. RIC V, pt 2, p. 489. no. 223. It does appear that this is the first example of this coin known with this obverse legend - IMP C CARAVSIVS AVG - because RIC was confusing two other coins. This is probably the first example of this precise type seen.

Mint of London, - // MLXXI. RIC V, pt 2, - This coin confirms a type only known from a rubbing in a Mike Vosper catalogue for which the reverse legend was unclear (RIchard Bourne in Numismatic Circular, Dec 2004, p. 378, Fig. 3, after Mike Vosper, Fixed Price List 80, Sept-Oct 1999, no. 49). It therefore provides complete evidence for this new type

Reverse: CONCORDIA MTLITVM; Clasped hands
Mintmark: RSR
20mm; 4.15g
RIC V, pt 2, -
This is the third specimen of coin with this reverse type - all three coins share the same reverse die. Note that MILITVM is incorrectly spelt as MTLITVM. One is in Paris and the other was sold at UBS 78 (9 9 2008), lot 1928. This coin shares the same obverse die as the UBS piece.

The coin is unusual style but is probably an official issue. It is the ninth example of this coin which the author has recorded.

It is quite possible that this is a base silver contemporary copy of an ADVENTVS AVG denarius of Carausius, a type which is common. There is another similar coin with legend NEVENTVS NI[ ], and mintmark RSR, in the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge) which might share the same source - it also is a rather crude piece. Both coins do need XRF analysis to determine silver content.&nb…

RIC V, pt 2, p. 521, no. 684. The mint for this coin has traditionally been given as Rouen, but it is quite likely that the mint moved with Carausius and might have even struck coins in Britain upon his arrival in the Province in AD 286/7.
