Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded but complete cast copper-alloy post-medieval plain double-looped buckle frame with surviving pin. It is trapezoidal, with a flat lower face and an upper face bevelled both internally and externally. This gives the frame a trapezoidal cross-section. The pin bar extends beyond the edge of the frame and terminates at each end with a rounded knopped protrusion. The pin is of looped construction. Viewed in profile one can see that the buckle is bent. Similar buckles can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 82; refs. 506, 507, 509).

A post-medieval cast lead object: a palm guard, for use by a leather worker to protect the palm whilst stitching. In plan it is oval in shape, pointed at one end: it is 55.9mm in length, and 49mm at the widest part. It is convex, with a maximum thickness of about 15.4mm. The domed surface is marked by one incised line at one edge and the flat underside does not seem to have any visible markings. Bailey (1995, 64-65) dates such objects to the 17th century onwards.

A worn, corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of late medieval to early post-medieval date. The plain frame is formed of a pair of 'Ds' that incurve towards the pin bar; the pin is missing. On the upper surface the frame appears to be bevelled round the outer edge and also internally on the loops. The lower face is flat, giving the frame a sub-triangular cross-section (with rounded corners). Buckles of this size with double oval frames have been found in late medieval contexts (cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 82-83; refs. 332-333), but as the form persists a…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded cast copper-alloy gilded mount of post-medieval date. The mount is flat and symmetrical, with rounded terminals and six knopped mouldings: one at each corner and two central. Any decoration on the surface has been hidden by the corrosion. The reverse features a pair of bent, pointed lugs which begin at the extremities of the terminals and curve round towards each other until they almost join. The mount's construction and decoration suggests a c. 17th-century date for it. Such a mount would have probably functioned as a strap fitting.
