A worn and corroded English medieval jetton with an unusual combination of devices. The barbed rose obverse (Berry type 7B) appears in a series dated to the late 13th or 14th century (see Mitchiner 1988, 110, 116; refs. 186, 244). The reverse features a cross patonce with four lions rampant gardent (standing left) in the angles, all surrounded by a pellet border; this design feature neither in Mitchiner nor Saunders (ed. 2001), although the combination can be found illustrated in Barnard (1981, 100; ref. 22).

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval composite buckle frame with forked spacer. The oval frame has a pointed central knop on its outer edge. It is bevelled externally on both faces; these faces feature file marks. The corroded, narrow wire pin is in situ. The prongs of the spacer are triangular and diverge as they extend. One has been broken towards the tip. The object is now corroded with a dark-grey patina with patches of off-white and light-green corrosion product. The spacer appears to be recessed to accommodate the missing plates. Similar examples of this buckle type can be …

A slightly corroded cast copper-alloy strap fitting with hooked element of post-medieval date (c. 1550 - c. 1700 AD). The artefact tapers to a knobbed terminal with ridged collar, and curves round to lozengiform terminal. The upper surface of the fitting has two parallel longitudinal grooves running inside two transverse grooves, in line with the lozengiform terminal; there is a transverse ridge above. The strap fitting generally has a semicircular cross-section with a flat reverse; above the moulding the cross-section flattens with the lozengiform terminal attaining a rectangular cro…

A complete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of post-medieval date (c. 1650 - c. 1750 AD). The sides are incurved to a central pin bar now bent to one side. One edge is straight while the other is curved. The pin bar features central rectangular mouldings that retain the wire pin. The straight edge has a sheet roller which the pin rests against. The other outer edge is externally bevelled and moulded internally; this is echoed on the lower surface. A similar buckle can be found illustrated in Margeson (1993, 33; ref. 218). This was found in a late 17th-century context; a slightly…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded, flat Roman cast copper alloy pelta-shaped mount. It has a flat lower surface and is bevelled on upper surface. The central 'arm' is bifurcated. The outer arms are rounded. The artefact has corroded to a variable mid-dark green colour. On the lower surface there are traces of an orange-brown corrosion product suggestive of mounting onto iron. Pelta-shaped mounts are associated with the military. A similar artefact has been published as a sword scabbard chape in Appels and Laycock (2007, 48; ref. AA5.27); this recorder is more hesitant.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy splayed foot, probably from a later medieval to post-medieval vessel. The object is broken just above this 'ankle', revealing a leg of sub-triangular cross-section with a probable central moulded rib. The foot has one flat side at the back and two concave sides. One of the sides of the base is worn perhaps indicative of how the object stood when in use. The splayed foot terminates in a splayed hoof-like form, this form of foot is comparable to the that published in Butler et al. (2009, 4; ref. 4b) dated to the late 15th or early 16th century.

A complete cast copper-alloy early post-medieval toggle-clasp. The artefact consists of sub-triangular plate which terminates in a toggle; the two are joined by a curved shank. The attachment end is cusped and has a central rivet hole; this is now filled with orange-brown corrosion product. On each side, in the corners, is a punched recess which appears to be purely decorative. The upper surface of the body is decorated with four longitudinal grooves. The plate tapers to a projecting, ridged and ribbed collar at its base; this is decorated with transverse incisions. On the lower surf…

A cast copper-alloy broadly circular mount of post-medieval date. The flat mount has six circular perforations which are fairly equally spaced around the circumference; these were drilled through the upper surface. The surface decoration is crudely formed with linear radiating lines around a central 'circle', and punched crescents between their terminals which are misaligned. The reverse features a pair of bent, pointed lugs which are slightly raised. The mount is also raised at the other cardinal points, where two parallel holes have since been drilled, which suggests that the mount …
