Record ID: HAMP-6CAF31
Object type: STUD
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small cast copper-alloy stud of possible Roman date. The stud has a circular sectioned head with a flat base and faceted sides. The central shaft is square in cross-section and tapers gradually from the head to the point. The artefact is probably Roman in date but its plainness makes it hard to rule out an earlier or later date. It is probably a decorative stud for a harness or furniture. The shaft has been bent slightly.

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete, albeit bent, sheet copper-alloy hilt-plate from a medieval whittle-tang knife. The object is broadly lozengiform in plan and has been bent in upon itself slightly at the centre of the plate. It has a broadly central rectangular perforation through the lower surface, remnants of an iron tang remain, the reverse has iron corrosion. The object is corroded with a dark-green patina where it survives, iron corrosion product is visible both on the front and reverse. No decoration is discernible. Such hilt-plates tend to be given a 15th-century date, although they could be earlier.
