Record ID: HAMP-BFE255
Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A slightly worn and corroded, cast copper-alloy medieval bar mount, small and sub-hemispherical in form. The convex, central lobe is crossed by four neatly incised horizontal lines that create ridges which have eleven vertical incisions, the majority run along the length of the incised horizontal lines, the central vertical incisions only run the length of two. The two smaller perforated side lobes both retain their copper-alloy rivets. The object is similar to artefact's illustrated in Read (2001, 23; fig. 12) and Egan and Pritchard (1991, 214; fig. 134) which are dated to the second…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman openwork belt mount, probably associated with the military and dating from the 3rd century AD. The is an elaborate pelta shape in plan with a bifurcating terminal which curves towards the concave section of the pelta, one terminal is incomplete due to an old break at the tip of the pelta mount. The reverse of the mount has a large integrally cast rounded shank with wide flattened head that would have secured the mount to a leather strap.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A slightly corroded, mostly complete cast copper-alloy mount of post medieval date, probably a strap-fitting. The mount is symmetrical, made up of a three sections arranged in a row: a larger central oval body 9.05mm long and 6.55mm wide, which is connected to the rounded knops, one of which is 6.6mm long and the other is 9.1mm long, by two parallel, transverse ridges. The upper surface is shallowly convex. The lower surface is slightly concave, with two pointed lugs, measuring c. 4.05mm. One lug is situated on the underside of one of the transverse ridges, the other is just within t…

A cast copper-alloy mount of Roman date and uncertain function. The mount is symmetrical, and is convex, measuring 3.6mm at the edges and rising gradually to 7.8mm in the centre. The central section of the mount is lozengiform with a perforation in the centre to hold the mount in place, recessed on the upper surface. A cast copper-alloy broadly circular mount of post-medieval date. The flat mount has six circular perforations which are fairly equally spaced around the circumference; these were drilled through the upper surface. The surface decoration is crudely formed with linear radiating lines around a central 'circle', and punched crescents between their terminals which are misaligned. The reverse features a pair of bent, pointed lugs which are slightly raised. The mount is also raised at the other cardinal points, where two parallel holes have since been drilled, which suggests that the mount …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded, copper-alloy sheet mount of medieval date. The object is cinquefoil in shape with a dome shaped central circular boss; the dome has had a hole punched in the top. Each petal is rounded and is shallowly convex. There seem to be low ribs radiating out from the boss between the petals, these are echoed on the lower surface by scoring. The artefact has a mid/dark-green patina with areas of off-white corrosion product. A mount of similar manufacture, although sexfoil, can be found illustrated in Griffiths et al. (2007, 115; ref. 1048).
