Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A silver-gilt dress hook with trefoil-shaped back plate with cusped edge. The back-plate supports three hemispherical bosses, each with applied filigree ornament in the form of three circlets with granulated knops, the inner circlet of each with no knop. In the centre, an aperture which would have held a central rosette attached by a rivet (see Gaimster, D., et al, 'Tudor Silver-Gilt Dress-Hooks', The Antiquaries Journal, 2002, Vol. 82, pp. 157-196, fig. 5, p. 163). On the reverse is soldered an incurved hook; the fastening bar now missing.

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval gold finger ring which is formed through a series of vertical rectangles, each keyed to recieve enamel which survives in tiny amounts. Inside is an inscription stating "If you regard its' my reward:" However several letters are cut off at the top and bottom of the hoop, suggesting that the ring must have once been a simple straight-edged hoop, and has been cut down at a later date, perhaps to provide gold for other purposes.

A Post-Medieval silver needle. The threading eye at one end, which has been flattened. The other end tapers to a rounded point. Some scratches. November 2012- It is now thought that this item is probably a lace tag rather than a needle. A similar example was acquired by the British Museum 2008 T276 (2010,8021.1) PAS ID: WILT-F492B5 (D. Object type: BRACELET
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval fragment of twisted silver wire with thistle-shaped gilt finial, approximately 4.0 cm long. The object, which has been examined by a number of British Museum curators in different fields, is hard to place and no parallels have yet been found for it. The thistle-shaped terminal is reminiscent of those on late 15th Century silver spoons, but these lack the twisted wire. A tentative dating to the 16th Century is proposed here until further evidence comes to light.

A silver medieval fitting, perhaps a box mount or from a miniature book cover, decorated at one end with four extended perforations, whereby the mount was attached to its original object. The shaft of the mount tapers slightly to a pointed end. The fitting is badly distorted and bent roughly at its mid-point so that the two ends are now joined.

A fragment of a Medieval silver spoon comprising part of the slimly tapering stem of hexagonal section and small portion of fig-shaped bowl; knop (probably originally a wrythen-knop or acorn knop) broken off and missing at top. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A crudely made post-medieval gold finger ring. The hoop is circular and narrows towards the bottom; it is curved in cross-section with the inside of the hoop concave. The square raised bezel has a female portrait facing left, and incuse lettering to either side: the letters appear to be 'RICI' to the left, and 'VI' to the right. Analysis has shown that the ring is composed of 22 carat gold and the ring was reported under the Treasure Act 1996. Although it imitates late Roman rings in its general appearance, it does not do so in any other respect, and there is no evidence from the w…

A silver-gilt dress-hook, with trefoliate back-plate and cusped outline. Three hemispherical bosses are soldered onto the front, one within each lobe of the trefoil. These are each decorated with three filigree circles around a central pellet. There is a further pellet in each circle and one other outside the circles on each boss. At the point where the three bosses meet is a delicate silver flower-head of twelve petals; this is attached to the back-plate by a gilded butterfly clip also visible on the back. On the reverse is a squashed attachment bar at the broad end of the trefoil; a…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A 17th century silver head-dress pin, ‘bodkin’ type. Rectangular in plan, tapering to a blunt point, and is hexagonal in cross-section. It is now incomplete, as the broader, top end has been lost at the beginning of a rectangular perforation (eyelet), which is now without its top, fourth side. Below the broken aperture, on both wide faces, are two incised tranverse lines, below which a succession of two incised ‘V’s or ‘tongues’ tapering in the same direction as the pin. Between them, travelling in the other direction towards the eyelet, are three incised chevrons. The…

This is a very heavy ring, with a flat octofoil bezel and square section hoop, angled at the shoulders. The back of the hoop inscribed ROBERT and the side at the back inscribed DUX. It is a puzzling ring as it seems to have borrowed features from earlier periods but the general shape and design has no pre-1706 parallels and the general consensus of opinion is that it is likely to be of relatively recent manufacture.

A medieval silver-gilt finger-ring set with a clear stone (probably rock-crystal). The bezel is raised and moulded into a pie-crust form to simulate the petals of a flower. The finger-ring is silver-gilt and dates from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth centuries.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval silver-gilt dress-hook, with trefoliate back-plate and cusped outline; some losses have occurred to the delicate cusping. Three hemispherical bosses are soldered onto the upper face, one within each lobe of the trefoil. These are each decorated with three filigree circles applied around a central pellet. There is a central perforation at the point where the three bosses meet: this would have taken a separate attachment. Part of the butterfly clip which would have held the attachment in place was also recovered. On the flat reverse the recurving hook remains, soldere…
