Five fragments of bloomery slag that appear to have been produced from the tapping process. All display smooth molten ridges and channels on the face characteristic of runs of solidified molten taped slag. Where broken the core is seen to be dense but filled with abundant, small bubbles and cavities. These fragments measure 1, 35mm by 33mm 2, 50mm by 35mm 3, 70mm by 50mm 4, 42mm by 30mm 5, 115mm, by 80mm

Solid cast cannon ball that is made of iron, one side is heavily corroded resulting in an area of heavy blistering. At a diameter of approximately 4" this cannonball would most likely be used by a type of cannon called a demi-culverin. The Demi-culverin was a large artillery piece that because of its effective range and power was often used in sieges and building demolition. Moreover, after the failed siege of Gloucester in 1643, the Royalist army withdrew to overnight in Painswick after a small conflict centred around the church in the village. As a result, it is a compelling p…

A set of Medieval to Modern shears consist of two blades long thin triangular blades that have a rounded but that narrows the thin square cross-section handed. At the end of both handles is a connecting flat loop that not only joins the two sides of blades together but also forms the spring mechanism for the shears. Shears are often undecorated or simply decorated, but whose shape changes little between the Medieval and Modern periods, with many examples illustrated in medieval manuscripts depicting sheep shearing, such as the Duke du Berry Book of Hours (1405). Therefore a broa…

An incomplete iron horseshoe of probable medieval date (c. 1250 - 1500). The horseshoe exhibits similarities to Clark's "Transitional" or "Later medieval" types It exhibits a broad web and a broad margin between the outer edge of the shoe and the nail holes. Only one half of the shoe remains, this still retains four rectangular nail holes. Cf. Clark, J, 2004, The Medieval Horse and its Equipment, Museum of London Press, London, p. 86 - 89.

A complete wrought iron tanged knife blade dating to the Early Medieval period. At the rear of the knife is a long thin tang that has a rectangular cross-section, the tang widens slightly from 11mm at the rear to 20mm at the forward edge. Stepped shoulders then lead from the tang to the blade. The knife has a cutting edge runs down one side of the blade, this edge is completely straight except for the very tip where there is a slight upward inflection. The opposite side forms the back or spine of the knife. The spine runs for 126mm (approximately 2/3s the length of the blade) …

Socketed, leaf-shaped spearhead or lance made from wrought iron and dating to the post-Medieval Period. This item has a leaf shaped blade (188mm long, 43mm wide, 10mm thick) which has a shallow, even lenticular cross section. Although overall the blade is in excellent condition albeit encrusted in iron corrosion, some of the edges have been truncated by corrosion, but this loss is minor. The socket has a circular cross-section and is 80mm long with an external diameter at the aperture of 22mm, (internal diameter 17mm). Extending from the base of the socket are two langets (103m…

An incomplete forged wrought iron late Medieval horseshoe. There are three un-recessed and un-fullered rectangular nail holes visible on the complete side with a pronounced rectangular calkin at the tip. On the opposite side is truncated halfway down its length resulting in the loss of the forward half. Two nails remain and are shown to have large square heads. One half of similar horseshoes can be seen in Clark, J. The Medieval Horse and its Equipment. p120-123 and are classified as type 4. Probably late Medieval 14th-15th century.

An incomplete early Anglo-Saxon iron shield boss. The boss is surmounted by a narrow-wasted rod in the centre (about 17mm long) which terminates in a circular disc (about 14mmin diameter) in the centre of the disc a flat triangular panel that could be the remains of a small silver plate. Below the rod, the cone has straight sloping sides and a diameter of about 90mm. The cone also appears to be thicker than normal but this maybe because of the limitations of the image and the lamination of the corroded iron. Below the cone, side walls would have extended down to the flanged ba…

The knife blade is thin with a low curved blade on one side and think spine on the other, although this is heavily corroded it still retains its original shape. The handle is circular in section (8mm, near the blade expanding to 11mm near the terminal). The terminal is formed from a globular base, then a flanged collar and finally a lozenge shape tip. A similar all iron construction can be found in LON-C21A9C and LON-7B8302

Iron knife. The first portion of the handle is made from solid iron which is octagonal in cross-section and gently expands from the blade for 18mm, after this point the base of a narrow tang (only 6cm remains) prudes from the centre sown that about two thirds of the handle would have been made from an organic substance. Only 10mm of the bladed remains, this is heavily corroded rendering any identification impossible.
